Senior Hurlers:
Our senior hurlers open the defense of the Daly cup on Friday night when they travelled across the City to Claughaun to take on Patrickswell in Round 1 of the Irish Wire Limerick Senior Hurling Championship. We were minus several regulars in David Dempsey, Jerome Boylan, Alan Dempsey, and Will O Donoghue all out through injury. Nevertheless, this gave an opportunity to the younger brigade who stepped up to the mark. Vince Harrington, Wayne Kearns, JJ Carey all getting starts along with Shane Dowling in the goals.
We began brightly an inside the first minute Peter Casey had the ball in the back of the net. Keith Dempsey followed up with 2 points inside either Diarmuid Byrnes’s points before we suffered a blow and a goal from Calvin Carroll. Peter Casey added to his tally with 2 further points along with points from Vince Harrington, Ronan Lynch, and Kevin Downes.
The weather was not conducive to free-flowing hurling but the teams performed admirably considering the wet conditions.
It was tight all through and by halftime, we led by a solitary point 1-8 to 1-7
We resumed the second period with the aid of the breeze and 3 Ronan Lynch frees had us motoring well. Midway through the half a brilliant individual effort from Aaron Gillane had them 3 points up. However, 2-line balls from Ronan Lynch and Keith Dempsey had us on parity coming down the home stretch. It was the Well who got the all-important late scores to see the game out on a 1-16 to 2-15.
Not the start we wanted but nevertheless a quick turnaround to face newcomers Kildimo Pallaskenry in Claughaun on Friday 11th at 7pm
Team: Shane Dowling, Emmet McEvoy, Mike Casey(capt), Cathall King, Mike Foley, Kevin Downes, Vince Harrington, Conor Boylan, Wayne Kearns, JJ Carey, Ronan Lynch, Keith Dempsey, Will Henn, Peter Casey, Adrian Breen.
Intermediates Hurlers:
Our second string were also back in action over the weekend when they travelled to Caherconlish to take on Cappamore. We again had to adjust the starting 15 as we lost 3 of last week’s starters to the senior squad. We played against a very tricky breeze in the first half and found it hard to get scores. Pat Gleeson opened our account early but it was only a Marcus Hogan point on 15 minutes that made up[ our tally. We trailed at the break by 8 points to 2.
The second half was much improved with points from Pa O Neill, Marcus Hogan, Evan Sweeney and Dylan Lynch. We then conceded a goal to trail by 7 points entering the final 10 minutes. Mark O Connor added a beauty before Dylan Lynch hit a purple with a goal and a point in rapid fire. We were now well into injury time and trailing by the dreaded two points when a long range speculative shot from Evan Sweeney sailed all the way to the net to give us the win and possibly undeserving on the day but you must always fight until the final whistle.
Final Score Na Piarsaigh 2-13 Cappamore 1-15
