Liam O Donoghue Tournament:
On Saturday 28 September 2024, on an unseasonably dry and warm day, the Annual Liam O’Donoghue U13 hurling tournament was held in Mungret, where 8 clubs battled it out over 5 hours of frantic hurling to be crowned the 2024 champions. Mungret were drawn in Group 1 with Naas, Clarinbridge and Clooney-Quin. Losing their opening game by 1 pt to a late goal from Naas left Mungret with an uphill battle to try and make the Cup Semi final. But they regrouped and a 7pt victory over Clooney-Quin, followed by a hard fought 4pt victory over Clarinbridge earned Mungret a place in the cup semi-final as group 1 runners-up. Naas finished as group winners with a 100% record, with Clarinbridge and Clooney-Quin getting 3rd and 4th respectively and a place in the Shield Semis.
Group 2 was a much tighter affair with no more than a single score deciding the outcome in all the games, but Bishopstown came out on top with Kilmaley only losing out on top spot, on head-2-head. Boherlahan picked up 3rd spot and Gort completed the table in 4th.
So the line-ups for the Semi finals pitted Kilmaley against Naas and Mungret against Bishopstown in the cup with Clarinbridge facing Gort and Boherlahan against Clooney-Quin in the Shield semis. In the Cup, Kilmaley would pip Naas on penalties. The other semi was also a tight cagey affair with Mungret grinding out a 3 pt win on a score line of 0-5 to 0-2. So after a disappointing start Mungret were in the final with a chance of retaining the Liam O’Donoghue cup.
In the Shield, Gort got the better of their neighbours, Clarinbridge, and Boherlahan beat Clooney-Quin to set up a Tipp v Galway shield final.
The Cup final was really a game of two halves. Mungret got out of the block early and by half time had a healthy 5pt lead. Kilmaley were not going away lightly and battled back to within 3pts with a minute remaining. Then with one of the last attacks of the game, despite stern defending by Mungret, they managed to raise a green flag and it was all square. And so to penalties. Both teams scored 1 and missed 2 in the first round and then in sudden death Kilmaley got the all-important score to claim the honours, much to the disappointment of the Mungret team and the home support.
In the Shield final Boherlahan-Dualla claimed the honours and brought some silverware back to the Premier county.
A big thank to all the clubs who took part in the tournament, to the referees who officiated, and to all who helped organised the event and helped out on the day. It was very well received by all the clubs who visited and was a great advertisement for Mungret St.Pauls GAA.

U-16 Football:
Mungret St. Pauls 1-13 Ballylanders 0-4
On Saturday 5 October 2024, in Mick Neville Part the Mungret St. Pauls U-16 Division 1 Footballers took on Ballylanders and the wind and relentless rain in the Semi Final. The weather made for a messy game with a lot of slips and dropped ball from both sides. Ballylanders had the aid of the breeze in the first half and with both sides only managing to get three points each it was all to play for in the second half.
Back out and Mungret St. Pauls wasted no time in getting the score board ticking over again as they kicked over five points before Ballylanders got their one and only point of the second half. Mungret St. Pauls kept the pressure on as they continued to get more scores finishing off with a goal to secure their position in the Final in two weeks time against Kildimo Pallaskenry.

It was a long day for our players as they played the opening match and the last match of the morning. Well done to all the players who took part in the Super 10s.
