Mungret/St Pauls GAA Club Notes:

U-16 Division 1 Hurling:
Mungret St. Pauls 1-11 Croom Ballybricken Bohermore 1-9
It came to extra time to separate Mungret St. Pauls and Croom Ballybricken Bohermore in the U-16 Division 1 Hurling Cup Final on Sunday 29 September 2024 in Mick Neville Park.
The weather was favouring noone on the day as the rain did not stop throughout the game and there was a strong breeze that Croom Ballybricken Bohermore had in the first half. Mungret St. Pauls had a poor start as they found themselves struggling to convert scores while Croom Ballybricken Bohermore had already scored a goal and four points before Mungret St. Pauls got off the mark with a boost of a goal, the next four scores were shared with Croom Ballybricken Bohermore getting the last play in before the half time whistle. Mungret St Paul’s 1-2 Croom Ballybricken Bohermore 1-7.
It took fifteen minutes before the first score came in the second half and this was followed up by another four points all coming from Mungret St. Pauls players to see the game a draw by full time. 1-7 each.
Extra time had the two teams fighting hard for possession, but half time came after both sides had added on another two points to see the game level again by the break. A quick turn around and it was again Mungret St. Pauls the only ones to score in the second half, with Croom Ballybricken Bohermore knocking at the goals, the ball was bounced back out of danger and Mungret St. Pauls got in two vital points near the end of the second half to give them the win. Captain, Killian Begley accepted the trophy from Bord na nOgs Denis Carroll on behalf of the team.

Ladies Gaelic Football:
Junior B Championship Quarter-Final
Mungret St. Pauls 4-14 Knockainey 0-2
What a weekend ladies football we had. Our Junior B team faced Knockainey at home on Saturday 21st September. It’s been a few years since we’ve had a Junior Team get so far in the competition and this team have been improving with every game this year. The first half got off to a quick start with 3 goals for Mungret but a packed Knockainey defence meant Mungret had to work hard for points. Mungret lead at half time 3-2 to 0-1. The second half was a very different game where the points kept coming for Mungret. The girls scored an impressive 1-12 in the second half earning each score by showing patience and great decision making. Final score Mungret 4-14, Knockainey 0-2. The girls advance to the semi-final in two weeks where they will play Gerald Griffins on Saturday 5th October. Best of luck girls. Many thanks to Knockainey for a great game. Ladies Intermediate Football:
Ladies Intermediate Championship Semi-Final Mungret St. Pauls 0-11 Fr. Caseys 0-9
On Sunday 22nd September, a ferocious battle for a place in the county final took place in Dromcollagher GAA pitch between Mungret St. Pauls and Fr. Caseys. The two teams met last year in a quarter-final where Mungret came out winners but this Fr. Caseys team were keen on creating more history for their club after reaching the semi-final stage for the first time. A nail biting game from the very beginning where there was nothing between the teams at half time which finished up 0-5 a piece. There was some very impressive passages of play all the way from the goalies up to the full forward line on both teams. The hunger for a spot in the final for both teams was very evident to all who were watching from the sidelines. The second half started off very even and each Mungret point was met with a response from Fr. Caseys. Fr. Caseys lead by one point in the final 15 minutes but the Mungret girls came back with a fighting force that couldn’t be matched. Mungret went three points ahead and Fr. Caseys had only a point left in the tank. The five Mungret subs with fresh legs made all the difference and drove Mungret over the finish line with a 2 point win. It has been four years since the girls have reached a county final and their hard work, dedication and support for each other has been the key to the county final this year. Huge congratulations girls you’ve done yourselves and your club proud. The girls will now face Knockainey in the County Final on Sunday October 6th. The very best of luck to everyone involved with this team. Many thanks to Fr. Caseys for a great game and to the referee. A special thanks to all the supporters who came to watch the girls.

It was a very tough match against a strong opponent in very warm conditions. The girls never gave up, got stuck in, and that’s all we can ask. They’ll learn from it, and we’ll drive on to the next match! Although we lost the final group match, we have still qualified and now have a semi-final to look forward to in the coming weeks. U-14 Games:
Well done to our 2 u14 teams who were out last Saturday in County Finals.
First up were the red side against Adare. And whilst they tried very hard and gave it there all, it just wasn’t to be.  All these girls can play at this age grade again next year.
Next up were the white team team in the Shield final against Oola. Mungret played well throughout all the match, and with just 10 minutes to go Oola started clawing their way back. They threw everything into it and with time almost up, almost the last kick of the game, They netted a goal and brought the score level.
20 minutes extra time was to follow where Mungret composed themselves and continued on their winning ways. Oola were no match for Mungret in the added time and it was Captain Sive Finnerty who was presented with the shield.  Well done to both teams and management.
Junior B Football:
Mungret St. Pauls 2-7 Ballinacurra Gaels 0-2
On Monday 23 September 2024 Mungret St. Pauls Junior B Footballers travelled to Mick Neville Park where they played near neighbours Ballinacurra Gaels in the City Junior B Football final. It did not look good for Mungret St. Pauls as 20 minutes in Ballinacurra Gaels had two points and all Mungret St. Pauls could show for their efforts were a lot of wides but they soon got into the game and started to perfect their shooting as they went for the hard hitting goals and in the last ten minutes had made up for lost scores as they closed the first half 2-1 to 0-2.
The second half was Mungret St. Pauls game as the younger players used their uncapped energy to power pass Ballinacurra Gaels to start to take their points. The relentless rain did not take a break through out the match which did not help either side.
Well done to our players and mentors who now play the County Junior B Football quarter final on Sunday.
Premier U-20 Hurling:
Mungret St. Pauls 4-15 Newcastle West 1-14
It was a very damp evening on Wednesday 25 September 2024 when Mungret St. Pauls U-20 Premier hurlers played their first match of the championship in Mick Neville Park under lights against Newcastle West.
Mungret St. Pauls had a slow start with Newcastle West having three points scored before they got up and running but they hit hard when they did with two points and a goal putting them into the lead. Newcastle West came back with the next four points reclaiming the lead, followed on by an exchange of points before Mungret St. Pauls struck again with their second goal. There was just time for one more point each before the half time whistle, Mungret St. Pauls clinging onto the lead with just one point, Mungret St. Pauls 2-5 Newcastle West 0-10.
Mungret St. Pauls continued on their scoring ways back out after the break as they extended their lead to three points. Just after the first ten minutes of the second half were up and Newcastle West scored their goal to level the game again. Straight from the Mungret St. Pauls puck out and Mungret St. Pauls regained their lead again with a quickly taken point, the Newcastle West puck out did not go their way as Mungret St. Pauls produced their third goal out of it. Mungret St. Pauls were working very well together as they out scored Newcastle West to the end confirming the win with a fourth goal. A great opening game for our U-20 Premier hurlers.
Premier Junior A Football:
Mungret St. Pauls 3-14 Cappamore 0-6
In Meanus on Saturday 28 September 2024 our Premier Junior A Footballers played Cappamore in the Relegation final with the winners getting to stay in the Premier Junior A group for 2025. This was a one sided game with Mungret St. Pauls youth standing out as Cappamore had the more experienced players. Cappamore got in early scores but Mungret St. Pauls had a slight lead from the start and never let it go, helped on by the first goal near the end of the first quarter, it was not looking great for Cappmaore as Mungret St. Pauls kept taking their scores. The Mungret St. Pauls scores were helped on with a penalty in the first half which boosted their lead even more. The second half was where Mungret St. Pauls almost doubled their score while Cappamore only added another two points to give Mungret St. Pauls a substantial win and confirmation of staying in the Premier Junior A group for next year.

U-14 Division 2 Football:
Mungret St. Pauls 2-9 Athea 0-5
It was very wet and breezy on Sunday 29 September 2024 when Mungret St. Pauls U-14 Division 2 Footballers played Athea in the Cup final in Mick Neville Park.
It was Athea who had the breeze in the first half and they started to build up scores, with a two point lead by the end of the first quarter, Mungret St. Pauls pushed on and in the last few minutes of the half produced their third point to leave only a point seperating the two sides.
The second half, Mungret St. Pauls had the breeze and took advantage as they quickly leveled the game back at the restart, followed on by four points, Mungret St. Pauls were building up a good lead. With just under ten minutes left on the clock, Mungret St. Pauls scored their first goal from a well taken penalty, this was very quickly followed up with the second goal leaving Athea struggling to get scores. With a  ten point lead, Mungret St. Pauls were sitting comfortably while Athea needed quick scores, they went for a goal but this was deflected to go over the bar for a point which would be the only score for Athea in the second half. Mungret St. Pauls finished out with one more point to be deemed the winners of the U-14 Division 2 Football Cup. Captain Sam Newman accepted the cup from Bord na nOgs Jack O’Connell on behalf of his team.
Well done to all our players, we would especially like to wish Sean Keogh a speedy recovery after receiving an injury during the match. Thank you to the coaches, parents and supporters for all their time during the year. A small break before the Super 10 competition takes place in a few weeks.
