Mungret/St Pauls GAA Club Notes:

U-16 Hurling:
Mungret St. Pauls 0-12 Cappamore 4-7
On Monday 26 August in Mungret Village Pitch our U-16 Division 3 hurlers played Cappamore in the last of their group matches. This was a tough match for our 15 year olds, with the first half where the Cappamore goalie was on top form, getting a touch on every ball that came near him. Cappamore had the best first half with the score-Mungret St. Pauls 0-4 Cappamore 3-5.
The second half saw Mungret St. Pauls up their game and started to go for points and hitting back at the Cappamore lead but the goals scored by the visitors were hard to beat. This group are our second team in the U-16s and are put in the Division 3 category to help develop the players and give them a taste of what to expect for next year when they play in the Division 1 group. Well done to all our players who played for this team, a Thank you also to the coaches and the parents, we look forward to seeing you all play next year.

Premier Minor Football:
Mungret St. Pauls 1-11 Fr. Caseys 0-16
It was a dry evening on Wednesday 28 August 2024 in Mick Neville Park when Fr. Caseys and Mungret St. Pauls played each other in the Premier Minor Final. There was very little separating the two sides in the first twenty minutes of the game with the difference bouncing from one to two points before Fr. Caseys rallied at the end of the first half to extend their lead to four points but Mungret St. Pauls managed to squeeze in one last score before the whistle. The half time score was Mungret St. Pauls: 0-5 Fr. Caseys 0-8.
The second half saw Mungret St. Pauls start well but it was not long lasted as Fr. Caseys came back into the game quick as they went five points up but a few points from Mungret St. Pauls had them still within range. This unfortunately was not strong enough as Fr. Caseys came back in and went six points up. The next score from Mungret St. Pauls was a three pointer in the first minute of injury time, followed by a point from the kick out, Mungret St. Pauls were throwing everything at Fr. Caseys as they went for another goal for the win but it was knocked back out and the full time whistle ended the game with Fr. Caseys the winners.
This Mungret St. Pauls team won the U-17 B cup last year and getting to the Premier Final this year proved how strong this team have gotten. Well done to all who were on the panel, majority of who will be on the team again next year. A special word of Thanks to the coaches for all their work, to the parents and supporters.

Senior Hurling:
Mungret St. Pauls 1-12 Patrickswell 2-28
In the Senior Hurling match in Claughaun on Saturday 31 August 2024 when Mungret St. Pauls and Patrickswell were both looking for their first win in the group. Patrickswell impressed from the start with an early goal while Mungret St Pauls missing the uprights before they eventually got out of the blocks. Patrickswell had gone six points up before Mungret St. Pauls replied. A further four points from Patrickswell were met with two from Mungret St. Pauls. After this, Patrickswell went for the net but it was sent back out by our goalie only to be returned and stopped by the net. Mungret St. Pauls next three points were met by Patrickswell five points finishing the half with a strong half time score, Mungret St. Pauls: 0-7 Patrickswell 2-13. Patrickswell opened the scores again in the second half but a run at the goal gave Mungret St. Pauls their only three pointer of the game, followed by a pointed free this was about as good as it got for Mungret St. Pauls as Patrickswell showed their experiences of being in the A group for the last few years. Mungret St. Pauls did get a few more points but there were not enough to make any impact on the score board.
Mungret St. Pauls next game is against Doon in Kilmallock in a weeks time.

Intermediate Hurling:
Mungret St. Pauls 0-20 Pallasgreen 1-16
Sunday 1 September 2024 in Fedamore when Pallasgreen and Mungret St. Pauls played each other in the Intermediate Hurling group game. There was a breeze in Mungret St. Pauls favour for the first half which they put to use as they were three points up within the first ten minutes, working hard, Mungret St. Pauls kept a few points between the two sides until the half time whistle when they were separated by three points. Mungret St. Pauls: 0-10 Pallasgreen 0-7. In the first half Pallasgreen threatened a goal but somehow it was cleared off the line. It was Pallasgreen that had the better restart but were only able to get to a point behind Mungret St. Pauls. An early shot at the Pallasgreen goalie saw Mungret St. Pauls get a point from a 65. A foul in the square gave Mungret St. Pauls a penalty, the shot was saved by the goalie along with the second strike but with a little bit of room a point was produced. With five minutes of normal time left there were four points separating the two sides and it was at this point that Pallasgreens hit the back of the net hard. The four minutes of injury time gave both sides an opportunity to add more scores on with Mungret St. Pauls holding tight to the one point lead they needed to be declared the winners.
This win is what Mungret St. Pauls needed to keep themselves out of danger as they now sit in the middle of the table after three games with a loss, a draw and a win. They are out again this weekend against Croagh Kilfinny on Sunday in Askeaton.
Team; Declan Browne, Conor Lynch, Jason Hassett, Eamonn Flahive, Cillian Archer, Cian Moloney, Eoghan Mulcahy (0-1), Conor Flahive, David Geary (0-1), John Wright (0-3), Mike Mullins, Mark O’Brien (0-12, 0-9 from frees), Diarmaid Hynes, Cian O’Brien (0-2), Brendan Giltenane (0-1), Tom Lloyd, Mark Moroney, Odhran O’Dwyer, Chams Jagana.

U10 Blitz:
This weekend our U10s were delighted to get an invite out west to take part in a Blitz v Newcastlewest, Templeglantine & Feenagh/Kilmeedy. There was an excellent standard of camogie displayed across all teams which coaches were delighted with.
Keep her lit girls!

U12 Girls:
Our U12s next stop in the Autumn league was Granagh Ballingarry last week. The girls played extremely well, working hard as a team and got some fine scores. The ice cream stop on the way home was well deserved!

Liam Patterson:
Mungret St. Pauls recently held a night to acknowledge the fantastic achievement when Liam Patterson won a bronze medal in the British Transplant games that were held in Nottingham last month. This was a great achievement by Liam as 2 years ago he was so ill he was unable to stand on the side of a pitch never mind even walking it.
A liver transplant 2 years ago changed Liam and his families lives for the better, it was a long recovery but the determination and dedication to getting better was the driving force from Liam and his family of course, wife Annette and children Oisin and Saoirse.
Once strong enough, Liam took up soccer with the Irish Transplant games and went to take part in the British Transplant games in early August. Liam threw his name into the hat for the 800m race and came in third place to collect a bronze medal. What a difference to when he could not even stand on the side of a pitch. Mungret St. Pauls are honored to have such a fantastic role model in the club to show that your illness does not define you, Liam worked hard to get to where he is today, he was even seen running the pitches the morning after his celebration night – preparing for the next games we think !
Of coarse, all this would not be possible without his donor, these Games are not about medals, instead the event allows athletes to honour their donor and all donor families, meet fellow transplant recipients and stay fit and healthy thus celebrating the great gift of life. We would urge everyone to have the conversation with your family and say Yes to Organ Donation, you could help now (if your over 18) by donating blood, go to https://www.giveblood.ie/

Community Games:
Congratulations to Tomek, Nessa, Lydia, Cathal, Rebecca and Saoirse who represented Regional Limerick at the Community Games All-Ireland final in Carlow on Sunday 8 September 2024 in the Group Music U16 category. They were up against some strong competition, but they delighted the judges with their music and came back to Limerick with a bronze medal.
Well done also to Cathal who is represented Limerick at the Community Games All Ireland final in the Solo music U-16 category, while he performed very well he was unlucky not to place. Congratulations to all.

U-14 Hurling:
Saturday 7 September 2024 was a busy day for our U-14 and 13 players as both our U-14 hurling teams were out in Semi Finals. The Division 1 players had an early start in Mick Neville Park when they played Na Piarsaigh in the Cup Semi Final. Mungret St. Pauls did not have the best start as Na Piarsaigh had secured the lead with a goal and a point before Mungret St. Pauls went three points on the trot which was cancelled out with Na Piarsaighs second goal. There was an exchange of points before Na Piarsaigh hit hard with their third goal and four points before the half time whistle leaving them with an 11 point lead and the half time score 0-5 to 3-7.
Mungret St. Pauls might have been written off at the break but they came back with a bang as they took charge of the game and were the only ones to score for the first fifteen minutes where they knotched up three goals and three points to take the lead. It was as this stage that Na Piarsaigh came back into the game and they took two of the next three points following that up with their fourth goal and finished out the game with the last three points. Our U-14 hurlers played well throughout their championship as they now prepare for next years U-16 Division 3 championship. Well done to all.
Mungret St. Pauls 3-9 Na Piarsaigh 4-12
The Division 3 hurlers were in the Crescent Comprehensive at lunch time when they played Templeglantine in the Shield Semi Final. This being our second team consisted of mainly our U-13 players and U-12 players. They put in a solid performance against a slightly taller Templeglantine team. Both teams shared the first 12 points in a game of cat and mouse, both sides defending well and getting in great tackles. In the last five minutes of the first half Templeglantine went up a gear and pulled away from Mungret St. Pauls as they added on a goal and three points with Mungret St. Pauls putting the ball over the bar just before the whistle stopped the game. Half time score Mungret St. Pauls 0-7 Templeglantine 1-9.
Back on the pitch and both sides again matched each other scores for the first eight minutes, Mungret St. Pauls had been trying hard and eventually got the ball into the back of the Templeglantine net. Unfortunatly this goal was replied to with Templeglantines second goal of the game. This was a better half for Mungret St. Pauls as they did not Templeglantine go any further ahead, then the five point lead they had at half time, each point Templeglantine scored, Mungret St. Pauls equalled it. Well done to all our players, this being the second team in the age group it is a development team because we have so many players on the age it is a great chance for the younger members to get game time and prepare them for next year when they play the Division 1 group. We look forward to what this team brings to the championship in 2025. Mungret St. Pauls 1-16 Templeglantine 2-18.

Senior Hurling:
Mungret St. Pauls 0-18 Doon 5-21
Our Senior hurlers had a disappointing game against Doon in Kilmallock on Saturday 7 September 2024. Doon did not waste time as they got in two early points before Mungret St. Pauls got their score going. Doon then took the opportunity to get in an early goal along with a point leaving Mungret St. Pauls trailing but not by much as Mungret St. Pauls brought it back to only a point behind with six minutes left in the first half. Doon pushed on and extended their lead to seven point by the break with the help of their second goal. Half time score Mungret St. Pauls 0-8 Doon 2-9.
The second half and Doon dominated again as they added on four points from play and their third goal from a penalty with Mungret St. Pauls managing to reply with only two points from play. The rest of the second half, Mungret St. Pauls equaled each of Doons points but there were two additional goals that were what lead Doon to a comprehensive win as Mungret St. Pauls assess this game and prepare for Na Piarsaigh in two weeks time.
Team; Conor O’Brien, Billy Molyneaux, Matt O’Sullivan, Liam Harrington, Brian Barry (0-1), Patrick Begley, Brian O’Meara, Barry Duff (0-1), Rory Duff (0-1), Darragh O’Hagan, Fintan Fitzgerald (0-6, 0-1 from free), Niall Mulcahy (0-1), Cian O’Halloran (0-1), Liam Lynch (0-2), Paul O’Brien (0-3, 0-2 from frees), Cian O’Brien, Sean Duff (0-1), Eoin O’Doherty, Shane Barry (0-1).

Intermediate Hurling:
Mungret St. Pauls 1-13 Croagh Kilfinny 2-19
On Sunday 8 September 2024 our Intermediate hurlers played Croagh Kilfinny in Askeaton in what was a hard hitting game as Mungret St. Pauls came off slightly more battered that Croagh Kilfinny. It took a few minutes for Mungret St. Pauls to settle into the game and when they did Croagh Kilfinny had four points on the board. Mungret St. Pauls were playing into a breeze and any mistake made was punished with a score from the opposition. Mungret St. Pauls had three points scored to Croagh Kilfinnys eight when the bear in the square, Mike Mullins had the ball in his hand and players hanging off him as he struck the ball and it went past the Croagh Kilfinny goalie who possibly thought his defenders had done enough to keep the ball from getting near him. This was followed up with a pointed free to leave the gap at only one point but Croagh Kilfinny were not going to let Mungret St. Pauls near to taking control of the game as they outscored the points and added on their own goal with ten minutes left. With a four point lead and only six minutes left to the first half a straight red saw Croagh Kilfinny down to 14 players, they finished out the last few minutes adding on another three points to leave the score Mungret St. Pauls 1-6 Croagh Kilfinny 1-13
Back out and Mungret St. Pauls tried to use the breeze to get vital scores as they brought back two points from the restart. Croagh Kilfinny went on to outscore Mungret St. Pauls five points to six with Coragh Kilfinny getting their second goal in the final minute of injury time just after Mungret St. Pauls was brought to 14 men after a second yellow card. This game did not end as Mungret St. Pauls wanted but they get one more game before the end of the championship when they play St. Kierans in two weeks time.
Team; Declan Browne, Conor Lynch, Jason Hassett, Eamonn Flahive, Cillian Archer, Cian Moloney, Eoghan Mulcahy, Conor Flahive, David Geary (0-1), Mike Mullins (1-0), Mark O’Brien (0-8, 0-7 from frees), Diarmaid Hynes (0-2), Brendan Giltenane, Odhran O’Dwyer, Chams Jagana (0-1), Tom Lloyd, Mark Moroney, JJ Harrington, Kieran O’Dowd (0-1).
