Mungret/St Pauls GAA Club Notes:
Limerick Players:
The Hurling academies were all in Cappamore on Saturday 9 August 2024. The U-14 hurlers were first up with an inhouse match, with Mungret St. Pauls Sean Donnelly playing as Cian Reilly was unable to play.
The U-15s played against Dublin and they came out with a win. Well done to Ruairi Dwane who gave a great account of himself.
The U-16s also played Dublin where they also were successful with a win. Well done to Killian Begley, Rory Gleeson, Oisin Donnelly and Rory O’Callaghan who all put in a great game in what was a great match.
Ladies Football:
Team of the week must surely go to the Mungret/St.Pauls Gaelic4Mothers&Others team.
They were one of six lucky teams chosen to participate on All Ireland Final day, last Sunday.
Well the excitement was huge, they hardly slept a wink the night before. Up and about early Sunday morning, a nourishing breakfast and off they set from the Community Centre, with encouraging words from Siobhan Horgan to set them on their way, nothing was going to get in their way. They were as elated as six year old children going on their first school tour.
Pre event formalities’ were done, they were all kitted out nicely in the purple and pink stripes.
They strutted down the Croke Park tunnel with great enthusiasm and adour. The opposition was Longwood from Meath in an exhibition match. The wind was at Mungrets heels. The throw in was won by Mungret and from there they gave an absolutely epic performance, a splendid display of football was played by both sides. After the match they were seen waving, saluting and greeting those in the stands. A sizable contingent had travelled to support these ladies from parents, partners, children, nieces, nephews, neighbours on their biggest moment in sport yet. These ladies are fantastic role models to have in the club, to witness your Mam stepping out on Croke Park brought tears to some eyes. Post match there were some laughs had, and this event will hold a special place in their hearts. There was no prize on offer today, the winning is in the taking part. A trophy carries dust but memories last forever. A massive thanks to those who set up, coach and continue to promote the Gaelic4Mothers& Others ethos. The G4MO section of the club has been running well since its beginning and continues to go from strength to strength.
Players on the day: Marie Fitzgibbon, Gillian Harkin, Lisa Madigan, Kathleen Maher, Anna Moriarty, Caitriona Rice Maire Rice, Evelyn Roche, Fiona Stack, Sorcha Turner, MaorFoirne:Rosie Pratt, Bainsteoir Cath Murphy.
U-16 Football:
There were mixed results in the U-16 Football on Monday 5 August 2024. The Division 1 team played Na Piarsaigh in Caherdavin where they had an early start on the score board getting two goals and four points to Na Piarsaighs 1-1 half way through the first half. By the end of the first half Mungret St. Pauls saw Na Piarsaigh hit the net for the second time but they matched that with an additional three points to leave the half time score 2-7 to 2-1. The second half was where Mungret St. Pauls held control of the game as they built on their lead to take a great win.
Mungret St. Pauls 2-14 Na Piarsaigh 2-4.
The Mungret St. Pauls division 3 team played St. Patricks in the Senior pitch where our 15 and 14 year old players were met by a bigger, stronger team. There was a good standard of football from our players who put in a serious amount of work, while the score was not on their side they gave a good account of themselves. There is one final game to play in the group against Monaleen in a weeks time.
Premier Minor Football:
Mungret St. Pauls 1-15 Ahane 0-19
In the last of the Premier Minor Hurling matches Mungret St. Pauls travelled to Ahane on Wednesday 7 August 2024 to pay the host team. Ahane took an early lead with Mungret St. Pauls playing catch up from the off, by the end of the first half Mungret St. Pauls were trailing by four points 0-7 to 0-11.
Mungret St. Pauls came back fighting from the restart, with ten minutes left on the clock Mungret St. Pauls worked the sliotar up and secured it into the Ahane net to level the game. The game was back level again after a few more scores on both sides and with only minutes left to play Ahane sent one last sliotar over the black spot to take the win.
This unfortunately left Mungret St. Pauls in fourth place in the group table and bowing out of the Championship. We would like to Thank the players, parents, supporters and management for all they have given to the Premier Minor Championship this year.
U-14 Football:
Both our U-14 Footballers were out on Thursday 8 August 2024. The Division 1 team were playing their last match in Athea against the hosts. The rain was a constant as was the breeze that Athea had in the first half where they used to their advantage getting ball into their forwards and taking scores. By the break Athea were the only ones who had scored. The second half was where Mungret St. Pauls came onto the scoreboard but with tired legs and strong Athea backs Mungret St. Pauls were unlucky to have their goal chances deflected away. This was the last of the group games for the Division 1 team and with two wins and three losses they sit just under Athea in fourth.
Mungret St. Pauls 0-4 Athea 2-6
The Division 3 team played Galbally in the Village Pitch in very wet conditions, this was a great battle between two strong sides with a lot of great scores being taken. Galbally had the lead in the first half leaving the score Mungret St. Pauls 3-1 Galbally 3-5 but the second half Mungret St. Pauls put everything they had into the 25 minutes getting some excellent goal chances. They were just unlucky to have the full time whistle when they were just one point behind the visitors. This team have done very well as our second team, they played seven games and won three, they are in the division 3 group so all the players in the U-14 age group get game time with our second team being mainly U-13 players. The results from this year will give them a great standing for next year when they play as 14 year olds against their own age. Mungret St. Pauls 6-1 Galbally 4-8.
Well done to all our players, parents, supporters and especially our coaches who arranged training and challenge matches throughout the year.
Senior Hurling:
Mungret St. Pauls 1-19 Kilmallock 1-20
A trip out to Bruff for the second round of the Senior A Hurling championship, on Friday 9 august 2024. A slow start for Mungret St. Pauls as they had conceded 1-3 before getting on the score board and halting Kilmallocks scores as they levelled the game with six unanswered points. Kilmallock responded regaining the lead with Mungret St. Pauls chipping away but by the close of the first half were just one point separating the two sides. Mungret St. Pauls had tried to get their own goal but the Kilmallock goalie was quick in his response.
Back out and Mungret St. Pauls levelled without hesitation, it was then Mungret St. Pauls goalies chance to shine as he pulled off a stunning save keeping the game level. An exchange of scores before Mungret St. Pauls finished some great passes with style as the ball was put in the best position and bounced into the net. This however got a response from Kilmallock as they leveled and produced a two point lead. Not giving up and with pressure put on the Mungret St. Pauls goals again, the scores were taken on both sides but the score board levelled once more with three minutes of normal time left to pay, Kilmallock were the ones to squeeze one more point in before the full time whistle to take the win.
U-16 Football:
Mungret St. Pauls 4-2 Monaleen 1-8
On Friday 9 August our U-16 Division 1 Footballers welcomed Monaleen to the Senior pitch. There were early goals from both sides with Mungret St. Pauls first one coming from a penalty, their second less than ten minutes later coming from play with Monaleen only scoring a point with their goal. Monaleen had a strong finish to the end of the first half taking the lead when they kicked over four more points to close out the first thirty minutes 2-0 to 1-5. The third quarter had Monaleen keeping their lead as both sides added on scores but just on the twenty minute mark Mungret St. Pauls netted for the third time taking the lead back. A fourth goal for Mungret St. Pauls saw the only reply from Monaleen as a point. A win for Mungret St. Pauls leaves them comfortable at the top of the group table with one last game to play against Ballybrown, scheduled for the start of next week.
