U-21 Football:
Mungret St. Pauls 1-6 Fr, Caseys 0-8
With a change of venue to Tournafulla on a very cold and damp Wednesday 27 December 2023 the U-21 Premier Football final, the last match of the year for Mungret St. Pauls and Fr. Caseys. It was a last minute goal that forced this final into extra time with only one vital point being scored in the twenty minutes to declare Mungret St. Pauls the U-21 Premier Football Champions.
This started out with very little between the two teams as each side had three points on the board into the last ten minutes of the first half. Fr. Caseys had the advantage of an inconsistent breeze which blew hard in the final minutes of the game when Fr. Caseys added on three points to lead by half time 0-3 to 0-6.
The second half was similar to the first but with Mungret St. Pauls not able to break the three point gap until into the final minute of injury time when a free kick for us landed the ball into the box and tapped into the back of the net. This forced the game to go into extra time with a heavy rain fall and very cold breeze on the pitch the ground was draining energy as players worked hard to get the ball moving up and down the pitch. Full time score 1-5 to 0-8.
The first ten minutes saw many possession changes with neither side getting any score it was not until two minutes remained on the clock that another free kick caught everyone’s breath as it was a very acute angle, but it curled perfectly to go between the uprights. The game was not over as the ball spent the last of the time in our defences. Fr. Caseys got two frees but both were unsuccessful as the full-time whistle was blown. Fr. Caseys had a lot of players suffering from cramp in the cold while all the matches Mungret St. Pauls had played in the previous weeks had helped the players stay going for the full length of the game.
This is another great day for Mungret St. Pauls as they are current holders of the premier Hurling and now the premier Football cup. An U-21 double which we don’t believe was done at any stage previous in our club history with both teams being Premier holders. Congratulations and well done to the players, coaches, supporters, sponsors and community for supporting our players.
