MUNGRET ST PAUL’S GAA CLUB NOTES

PREMIER INTERMEDIATE HURLING
Mungret St. Pauls 1-17 Courcey Rovers 1-18
On Saturday 11 December 2021 in the TUS Gaelic Grounds our Premier Intermediate Hurlers played what was the last game of the year in the Munster Club Semi Final against an equally strong Courcey Rovers from Cork. A crowd of over 800 supporters arrive to watch the game and they were not disappointed in the highs and lows this game brought.
Within 90 seconds from the throw in Courcey Rovers hit the net, there could very easily have been another two goals added to this score but both, within seconds of each other were superbly blocked by our goalie. Mungret St. Pauls first score was an inspiring sideline cut. Courcey Rovers had the edge by the first water break, 1-6 to 0-4. There were two very impressive long range frees struck by the Courcey Rovers goalie adding to their score. Mungret St. Pauls restarted strong with two points but they were matches as was our third point of the quarter to leave the same five points separating the two sides by half time.
In the second half Mungret St. Pauls kept driving forward at every opportunity and this helped as they started to narrow the gap, by the second water break there were three points dividing the sides. Into the last quarter it was all or nothing for Mungret St. Pauls and they went on a scoring hat trick but Courcey Rovers had added a point to keep the sides apart by one point. A pressure soaked last minute free right infront of the Mackey Stand with all eyes on every move for us lifted the roof off the stand as the ball soared through the uprights to bring the game into extra time.
The first half of extra time saw the two sides level again with only a point for each side scored. The second half it Courcey Rovers looked like they had it in the bag as time was ticking away and they had four unanswered points scored, the only way out of it was to send a ball into the waiting forwards and it worked after a quick thinking pass to closer the goal send the ball into the back of the net, Mungret St. Pauls were hanging on with only three minutes of injury time, Courcey Rovers still held the one point over our heads, with the ball going up and down the pitch every attempt went wide and eventually the whistle was blown to end our hopes of another last second draw.
Well done to our players and management who have not disappointed us this year, they now play Senior in 2022 which after a much earned break they will be back training for in the new year. Thank you for all the work you have done, we look forward to next year to get out and support you.
