MONALEEN GAA CLUB NOTES

SENIOR HURLING: Our senior hurlers played out an exciting draw with Murroe-Boher, 0-15 each, in their latest group game in the the Bons Secours Hospital County Senior Hurling Championship on Saturday evening last. Monaleen have taken six points from their opening four Group 2 fixtures with two wins and two draws to date and sit joint top of a very tight group. Monaleen face Ballybrown in their next outing on Sunday, September 1 at Claughaun at 1pm. Best of luck to the players and management team in their upcoming games. All support appreciated.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Our senior footballers face Fr Casey’s in the Irish Wire Products Ltd County Senior Football Championship Group 1, Round 5 on this Saturday, August 24 in Adare at 6pm. All support appreciated.

GOLF CLASSIC: Tee off in the Monaleen GAA Club fundraising Golf Classic which takes place at Castletroy Golf Club on Friday, September 27. Teams of three for the champagne scramble format competition cost €180. A limited number of tee times are available. U15 FOOTBALL: Congratulations to the Monaleen players who were members of the Limerick U15 football side which defeated Antrim by 2-7 to 0-12 in the final of the Dermot Earley Cup on Saturday last in Abbottstown. The four Monaleen players who are members of the squad are Darragh Murray, Conal O’Duinn, Oisin O’Connor and Darragh Clifford. Well done lads.

CÚL CAMP: The GAA Cul Camp is continuing this week at our clubhouse and Peafield Road venues. The camp caters for children aged 6-12 years. The camp is proving a great success despite the weather proving to be a spoil-sport on Tuesday.

LOTTO RESULTS: The latest Lotto draw took place on August 15, with the jackpot standing at €14,500. The numbers drawn were 1, 8, 18, and 34. Winners of the €50 lucky dips were D/S O’Malley, Killonan; P. Murphy, Fairways; E. Cosgrave, Mulcair Drive; E O’Donavan, Monaleen Stores. Tickets can be purchased on a weekly basis from local shops and pubs and the draw is held every Thursday night in the club at 10pm.

U14 CHAMPIONSHIP: Monaleen played Round 3 of the U14 Championship on Tuesday, August 13 at home to Adare. Four points from play in the first minute of play signalled an early strong start from Monaleen with points for Ellie Madden (2), Sarah Burke and Abi Houlihan. Adare responded strongly with 2 goals from play in the 19th and 23rd minutes, giving Adare a 1 point lead going into half time on a score line of Monaleen 0-05 Adare 2-01. A strong start to the second half for Adare saw them score 2 goals and 3 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Monaleen responded with a goal and a point but Adare ran out winners on a score line of 4-05 to 1-07.

ROUNDERS: Community Games Rounders: Well done to Monaleen Camogie players who represented Monaleen in Rounders in Community Games at the weekend in UL, finishing in 3rd place overall.

BLITZES: Best of luck to Monaleen U8 team who play in blitz in Murroe this Saturday morning and Monaleen U11 who play in blitz on Sunday in Granagh Ballingarry.

U16 ALL-IRELAND FINAL: Best of luck to Ella Hession, Niamh Moloney, Aoife Nelligan and Aoife Doyle and their Limerick Camogie team mates in the U16 All-Ireland Final this Sunday, August 25, throw in at 2pm in MacDonagh Park, Nenagh. Please come out to show your support for Limerick.

LADIES FOOTBALL

JUNIOR TEAM: The Groody Gaels ladies Junior team travelled to Kilbehenny last Wednesday night (August 14) to take on Galtee Gaels in the third round of the junior county championship. In tough conditions, Groody Gaels came out on top in a hard fought battle which saw some excellent football on display from both sides. Congratulations to the girls who now progress to the county semi-final which is scheduled for the 8th September.

U-11 FOOTBALL: On Saturday last, August 17, 28 players from the Monaleen U11 squad took part in the Newbridge Sarsfields U11 football tournament in Co Kildare. We entered two teams who played against clubs from Ulster and Leinster, including St Sylvester’s, Malahide, Templeogue Synge St. and Castleknock from Dublin, Moorefield from Kildare and Tyholland from Monaghan, who ran out eventual winners of the event. The Monaleen boys displayed some fantastic skills and teamwork throughout out the day. A big thank you to Sarsfields for the invitation to the tournament. It was a fantastic trip for the boys.
