CAMOGIE NEWS:
HISTORIC OCCASION: Our Intermediate team played their first match of 2021 in the League on Monday night. This was in fact the first match any Monaleen camogie team has played at this grade so another first for the club. Monaleen’s first score was an equalising point from Amy Burke and for the remainder of the half Monaleen were on top. At half time it was 8pts to 1-1. The match was competitive throughout, but the Monaleen girls were clinical in front of the posts and in fact there were 7 different scorers from the home team who finished deserved winners with a scoreline of 1-16 to 1-2.
Panel: Niamh Moloney, Saoirse Lane; Grainne Fullen; Aoife D’Arcy; Caitlin Bonfil; Shannon Power; Laura Hession; Emily O’ Halloran; Lucy D’Arcy; Aoife Sheehan; Ruth Heavey; Laura Southern; Saoirse Fitzgerald; Amy Burke; Aine Doyle. Next up is a home match v Croagh on Monday 21st at 8pm.
SUMMER LEAGUE JUNIOR: The Junior team made the long trip to Tournafulla on Friday evening. It was a fast competitive game with good skilful play from both sides. At half time the game was in the balance at 5pts to 3pts in favour of the home side. At the 2nd water break there was 3pts in it with Monaleen creating a couple of goal chances but just failing to get the score that was needed. A goal from a free with the last puck of the game for Tournafulla resulted in a final score of 1-9 to 0-4 in favour of the home side. Panel: Avril Kinnerk; Emily O’Brien; Aoilean Hennessey; Megan O’Keeffe; Aine Hegarty; Chloe Haugh; Charley Drury; Grace Malone; Jenny Holmes; Keelan Corcoran; Shalini Kujur; Katie Golden; Kim Comerford; Ella McCarthy; Amy Kavanagh; Abi Houlihan.
Next match for the Juniors is St Ailbes at home on Wednesday 23rd at 8pm.
U14 LEAGUE: Our U14s played their second match in the now U14 league last Thursday 17th June. This time we were away to our close neighbours Ahane. Playing against a young Ahane team, the Monaleen girls took a while to get going and were finding it hard to find space against a very good Ahane defence who blocked and hooked really well. While we had a nice lead at half time, it definitely wasn’t as easy as the score board indicated.
The switching of corner forward Ella Rock to midfield was the turning point in the second half as she ran riot through the Ahane line scoring a fantastic 3-2 . The forwards suddenly found more space and they too got on top as the older age of our girls eventually started to show and the scores started to flow.
Our half back line once more stood firm and the full back line with captain Andrea Costello were as cool as ever clearing the ball up field. Our midfielders again worked very hard as the Monaleen girls notched up a second victory. Thanks to Ahane for a very sporting game as always and their young team will definitely be the team to watch next year. Next week the girls are away in Kileedy for round 3. Team: Erika McCarthy, Emma O’Leary, Carrie McCormack, Andrea Costello, Lily Reid, Rebecca Bromell, Emma McGrath, Alice Sheedy, Robyn d’Arcy, Millie Reen, Rachel Widger, Grace Hegarty, Ella Rock, Molly Morrissey, Lucy Power. Subs used Hazel Noonan, Aisling O’Leary, Sarah O Halloran, Louise Burke, Isabelle Bromell. Other subs: Orlaith Purcell, Katie O Gorman, Charlotte Liston, Sarah Sullivan, Eabha Cregan and Kate Moloney.
CONGRATS: Congratulations to Lucy Power, Grace Hegarty, Millie Reen, Emma McGrath, Kate Moloney, Carrie McCormack and Robyn d’Arcy who were selected for the county U14 camogie panel. Also to Ella Rock, Alice Sheedy, Grace Hegarty, Kate Moloney and Rebecca Bromell who have been selected on the county U14 LGFA panel.
