LIMERICK WIN FIRST MUNSTER SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE in 1897

Limerick represented by Kilfinane won the Munster Senior Hurling Championship title in 1897, – 125 years ago – .
It was Limerick’s fifth Munster Final appearance including a replay. In 1891 they lost to Kerry on a replay by 2.04 to 0.01, they had defeated Kerry 1.02 to 1.01 in the original fixture but because of an objection, the game had to be replayed. Limerick contested the Provincial finals in 1893 (losing to Cork) by 5.03 to 0.00, and in 1895 (losing to Tipperary) by 7.08 to 0.02
1897 saw Limerick reach both Munster Senior Championship Finals Limerick (Commercials) were the All Ireland Champions in 1896 and reached the Provincial final the following year, losing out to Cork in the Football Final by 0.05 to 0.03, while the same two Countie s contested the Senior Hurling Final where the Kilfinane side took the honours winning by 4.09 to 1.06.
