AHALIN NS – Cumann na mBunscol County Schools Finals

Boys County Cup Div.1

Monaleen 4-3 Ahalin 1-5

Ahalin Boys went down battling at the penultimate stage after a terrific contest against defending champions Monaleen on Thursday last. It was a thrilling game with only a point separating the teams as the game moved into injury time. Ahalin had the better of their city opponents in the first half and perhaps should have lead by more than a point at half-time. Two early goals by Monaleen at the beginning of the second half threatened to put the game beyond them but our boys held their nerve and slowly chipped away at the deficit. A penalty by Daniel put Ahalin right back into the game and were pushing hard to get the equalizer in injury time when two Monaleen counter-attacks yielded two goals. It was hard luck on the boys who exhibited great courage. Well done to all the panel who did school and parish very proud.

Celtic Images Shield Div.1

Semi-Final Ahalin 2-5 Kilmallock 2-1

Next up were the girls who reversed this year’s Camógie defeat to the same opponents with a great win to progress to the final. Kilmallock started the stronger and two early goals put them in command. Like the boys the previous day, Ahalin refused to panic and slowly chipped away at the deficit, thanks to Ruby’s frees, to close the gap at the break. The girls started the second half where they left off and continued to add on the scores. When Órnagh goaled it looked like the game was settled but credit to Kilmallock who kept fighting back and it was great defending by all including Nicole, Holly, Corie, Jorgia and Kayleigh ensured that Ahalin qualified for a first ever final at this level.

Final Roxsboro NS 3-4 Ahalin 1-4

The pattern of the semi-final was defeated as Ahalin got off to a slow start and fought their way back into the game, although this time they left themselves with too much to do. Although the first half was even, three goals from Roxboro looked like being enough and they lead 3-1 to 0-3 at the interval. Despite playing into a strong breeze, our girls performed brilliantly in the second half and taking the game to their opponents, Ella-Mae being a dangerous threat up front. It took stout defending from the Roxboro girls to keep out the goal Ahalin badly needed and when it did arrive, a penalty from Ruby, it was too late. It was a great achievement for this team, more than half of whom were either from third or fourth class, to reach the final of the premier schools’ football competition in the county. Well done to all the panel.

A special thanks to Cormac Behan for his match reports and his continued great work with boys and girls in Ahalin NS.
