Sympathies:
The club would like to extend its deepest sympathies to the Mackessy family on the peaceful passing of John, Kilcolman East.
Memories of Johnny bring to mind a golden age for our club. Johnny was part of the juvenile (u16) winning team of 1961, quickly graduating to the clubs minor team that captured a record three in a row west minor hurling championships from 1962 to 1964, eventually culminating in a west junior hurling success in 1967.
Donning a red Liverpool jersey, Johnny was ever present in the Knockaderry goal in 1960’s and 70’s, playing parish league in the GAA’s centenary year, 1984 in a career that spanned three decades at adult level.
In an era when rules were much different, the goalkeeper had to be the bravest person on the pitch and in that Johnny was always a shining light for the parish.
The ballad of the ‘Knockaderry Hurlers 1967’ famously recalls that, ‘the saves of John Mackessy would warm your heart’.
As a young man, Johnny also served two years as the clubs secretary in 1963 & 64.
In recent times, Johnny was a great source of knowledge on times past, his memory crystal clear, his wit sharp and story telling enthralling.
We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Margaret, his daughter Joanne, sons John and Noel and the wider Mackessy family.
May Johnny Rest in Peace
