KILTEELY/DROMKEEN GAA CLUB NOTES
Tossy Ryan RIP
It was with great sadness that the news filtered through of Thomas (Tossy) Ryan on Sunday morning. Tossy had a deep love of the Gaa, nobody was happier when Limerick won last year’s All-Ireland.
Tossy played much of his underage hurling and football with Hospital Herbertstown, winning South titles in both codes. In 1962 he donned the green of Limerick as he played right half back on the Limerick Minor hurling team. In 1965 the played midfield on the County U21 hurling team alongside Eamon Cregan.
Like many at the time, Tossy left for England where he continued playing the game he loved with Saint Marys. In 1971 he returned to Limerick and played his first game for Kilteely against Dromkeen, the clubs would go on to merge the following year. The following year he played with Hospital Herbertstown just missing out on Kilteely Dromkeen’s County title in 1972. In 1973 he was on the losing side for Hospital Herbertstown in the county final. A couple of years later he returned to play with Kilteely Dromkeen where he played well into the mid-eighties.
Tossy loved nothing better to have a pint of plain and sit at the counter where he would easily converse with anyone who was lucky enough to join his company. A very affable man, he could chat about any subject and had a very keen sense of humour.
Tossy was very fittingly honoured at last year’s East Limerick Old time Gael’s awards in Caherconlish where his son Tommy accepted the award on his dad’s behalf. Tossy was held in very high regard by all in the Gaa community and this was very evident on the night.
Tossy is survived by his beloved wife Helen, sons Tommy, Barry and Maurice, brothers John and Jimmy and Sister Helen and Mary (both deceased) and many other relatives and friends.
