Early Goals Vital to Claughaun/St Patricks six point win
County U21 B Hurling Championship Group 3 Round 1
Claughain/St. Patrick’s 4-18 Granagh Ballingarry 4-12
Two goals each by Kyle Mullins and Shane Cross in the opening twelve minutes paved the way for a deserved six-point victory for Claughain/St. Patrick’s over gallant Granagh Ballingarry in the opening round of group 3 in the county U21 B Hurling Championship played on the astroturf pitch at UL North campus on Saturday afternoon.
Mick Mann of Ballybrown took charge of this opening round county U21 B Hurling championship Group 3 be played in front of a good crowd despite the change of venue from Ballingarry on an excellent pitch. Robert Callaghan and Owen Lynch traded white flags in the opening minute before Kyle Mullins finished past Granagh Ballingarry keeper Thomas Twomey in the second minute. Then white flags were traded from open play by Josh Quelle Mulcare on 3 minutes and Diarmuid Hegarty on 4 minutes before Kyle Mullins finished past the Granagh Ballingarry keeper for the second time a minute later to leave it 2-2 to 0-2 in favour of the city combined side on 5 minutes. Eoin Herlihy from open play on 6 minutes and Diarmuid Hegarty from a placed ball on 7 minutes traded white flags before Granagh Ballingarry no.11 Eoin Lynch split the uprights from open play to reduce the deficit to five Claughain/St. Patricks 2-3 Granagh Ballingarry 0-4 on 8 minutes. The next ten minutes was all Claughain/St. Patrick’s with a [pair of green flags by Shane Cross, 5 white flags by Diarmuid Hegarty (3play 2 frees) and Sean Mortell a white flag from open play to leave the city combined side seventeen ahead 4-9 to 0-4 on 18 minutes. The Granagh Ballingarry boys failed to be overawed with a trio of white flags from open play courtesy of Michael Russell in a five-minute followed up by a Rory Condon green flag to reduce the deficit to eleven 1-7 to 4-9 on 24 minutes. The Claughain/St. Patrick’s boys finished the opening half strong with four unanswered white flags courtesy of Shane Cross (play) on 25 minutes, Diarmuid Hegarty (free) on 27 minutes, Sean Mortell and Shane Cross (play) on 28 and 30 minutes to send the city combined side Claughann/St. Patrick’s in at the interval leading by fifteen 4-13 to 1-7.
Granagh Ballingarry minus their star ni.6 Darragh Casey made a dream start to the second half with a cracking goal by their no.14 Eoin Horgan inside a minute to reduce the deficit to twelve 4-13 to 2-7. The next 12 minutes was again all Claughain/St. Patrick’s with four unanswered white flags through Diarmuid Hegarty and Shane Cross (play), Diarmuid Hegarty (free) and Kyle Mullins (play) before substitute Paudie Murphy hit a cracking goal for the boys from Knockfierna on 44 minutes and Owen Lynch followed this up three minutes later with a white flag from a placed ball to leave 12 between the sides Claughain/St. Parrick’s 4-17 Granagh Ballingarry 3-8 on 47 minutes. Then Diarmuid Hegarty split the uprights from a 65 on 49 minutes cancelled out from a placed ball by Owen Lynch three minutes later to leave 12 again between the sides Claughain/St. Patrick’s 4-18 Granagh Ballingarry 3-9 on 52 minutes. Then after three minutes of scoreless play as many minutes for the Granagh Ballingarry boys’ courtesy of Michael Russell, Josh Quelle Mulcare and Eoin Horgan followed up by a late green flag from a placed ball by Owen Lynch which was too little too late for the Granagh Ballingarry boys. At the final whistle the combined city side Claughain/St. Patrick’s were deserved 6 point 4-18 to 4-12 winners of the two league championship points on offer after a most enjoyable 38 score contest Granagh Ballingarry will have to regroup ahead of their next game against Ballybricken-Bohermore on Saturday 21st November in Caherelly at 2pm.
Where victory is a must to stay in contention for a semi-final spot. We wish a speedy recovery to both Darragh Casey and Paudie Murphy who were forced to leave the field of play due to injury and all in our club were delighted to see Sean Murphy who came on as a substitute late in the second half back in action for the first time after suffering a serious leg injury twelve months ago. Claughain/St. Patrick’s scored 4-12 from play 0-5 from frees and 0-1 from a 65.

Community Games Re-Established:
Granagh/Ballingarry are delighted to have the Community Games re-established in our parish again. Community Games is where all young sports people begin and provides a huge range of activities for children from 6-17 years of age. These activities include a number of individual and team sports, some include art, hand writing, drama, music, draughts, chess, hurling, football, camogie, soccer, Athletics. The full list can be found on the Community Games website, the community committee will hold a registration night on Wednesday 15th November from 7pm to 9pm in the supper room in Ballingarry Hall. Cost is €10 per child up to a maximum of €30 per family.

1973 Keeping The Dream Alive Book Launch:
The story of Limerick’s historic All Ireland hurling success 50 years ago in 1973, ‘Keeping The Dream Alive’ book was launched by the Mayor of Limerick City and County Councillor Gerald Mitchell in front of a big attendance on Sunday night at Fitzgerald’s Woodlands Houser Hotel, Adare.
The book numbering 532 pages is packed with original archive material plus a host of photographs, many of which have never been seen before. The profits from this book which costs 30, will be shared between two most deserving charities, the Children’s Ark University Hospital Limerick and the Limerick Society of St. Vincent de Paul would make an ideal present for a family member or friend.
