GRANAGH BALLINGARRY GAA CLUB NOTES
GRANAGH BALLINGARRY CLAIM 6th WEST B TITLE WITH LATE SCORES
WEST LIMERICK JUNIOR B FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
GRANAGH/BALLINGARRY…….1-11
KNOCKADERRY…………………..1-6
In difficult wet and windy conditions at Athea on Saturday with only one point separating the sides following a cracking Kieran Storin goal for Knockaderry on 55 minutes, which was cancelled out two minutes later by second half substitute Luke Flynn following a long solo run and a well taken point by Denis O’Connor on 59 minutes paved the way for a hard fought 5 point victory for Granagh/Ballingarry over gallant Knockaderry to take their sixth West Limerick Junior B Football Championship title and a first since 2018 to go joint top of roll of honour with Knockaderry.
The game was played in front of a very small crowd for a west Championship final helped no doubt by the long journey both sets of supporters had to travel to the Athea venue, which was in top class condition with Derek Byrne of the host club in charge. Both sides were forced to lineout minus key players due to work, injury and other commitment but the players on duty for both sides served up 60 minutes plus of exciting fair with the issue in doubt right up to the final whistle. Knockaderry won the toss and elected to play with the aid of the wind in the opening half but it was Granagh/Ballingarry who were first of the mark with a second minute point from a placed ball by Aaron Smith. Wides were exchanged before a pair of white flags for Granagh/Ballingarry through Jack O’Donoghue from open play on 6 minutes and Aaron Smith from a placed ball three minutes later to leave it 0-3 to 0-0 in favour of the boys in black and green on 9 minutes. Then after 3 minutes of scoreless play Knockaderry finally opened their account through Robert Egan, with a point from a placed ball on 13 minutes cancelled out from open play by Jack O’Donoghue two minutes later to leave Granagh/Ballingarry three ahead 0-4 to 0-1 at the end of the first quarter at the water break.
On the resumption of play a pair of white flags through Aaron Smith from placed balls on 16 and 19 minutes extended the Granagh/Ballingarry boys’ advantage to five 0-6 to 0–1. A couple of wides were exchanged before Michael O’Sullivan of Knockaderry split the uprights from a placed ball to reduce the deficit to four 0-6 to 0-2 on 23 minutes. The standard of football in the next five minutes was poor with both sides guilty of inaccurate shooting before Michael O’Sullivan of Knockaderry finally found the range and he split the uprights from a placed ball on 29 minutes to reduce the deficit to three to leave it Granagh/Ballingarry 0-6, Knockaderry 0-3 at the interval.
The opening five minutes after the interval were scoreless before white flags were traded from open play by Kieran Storin on 36 minutes and Jack Cagney on 38 minutes. Aaron Smith from a 45 on 40 minutes and Robert Egan from a placed ball two minutes later to leave three between the sides, Granagh/Ballingarry 0-8, Knockaderry 0-5 on 42 minutes. Gearoid Lynch and Jack Hartnett had wides for Granagh/Ballingarry before Michael O’Sullivan of Knockaderry split the uprights from a placed ball on 45 minutes to reduce the deficit to two, Granagh/Ballingarry 0-8, Knockaderry 0-6 at the end of the third quarter at the second water break. When play got underway a couple of wides were exchanged before a pair of white flags from open play courtesy of Denis O’Connor on 50 and 53 minutes to extend the Granagh/Ballingarry boys’ advantage to four, 0-10 to 0-6 with 7 minutes of normal time remaining. The Knockaderry boys far from being over-awed had a cracking Kieran Storin goal on 55 minutes to reduce the deficit to one, 1-6 to 0-10. Knockaderry created a number of chances to level the score, which they failed to convert before Granagh/Ballingarry upped their game with a smashing goal by second half substitute Luke Flynn following a long solo run on 57 minutes and a well taken point by Denis O’Connor two minutes later to leave the Knockfierna men five ahead but only just, 1-11 to 1-6 at the final whistle after a most enjoyable hard fought contest to take their sixth West Junior B Football Championship title, a first since 2018 to go joint top of the roll of honour with Knockaderry.
