John O’Connor RIP:
A great old Gaelic games enthusiasts, first aid official and camogie coach John O’Connor, Ballyguile, Castletown/Granagh died peacefully surrounded by his family. John served as first aid official for the Granagh team that was crowned West Limerick Junior A Hurling champions three years-in-a-row 1975, 1975, 1976 and also went to claim County Junior A Hurling Championship honours in 1976 defeating Staker Wallace 3-11 to 0-7 after a replay in Bruff on Sunday 12th December. He also served as coach to many Granagh/Ballingarry underage camogie sides winning count and national titles. Despite being in failing health in recent years John still maintained a great interest in the local GAA club and camogie affairs and was delighted when Limerick’s our own Aoife Sheehan in 2007 and Fiona Hickey captained Limerick to win the All Ireland Intermediate Camogie Championship title and when Limerick won the Liam McCarthy Cup for the fourth year-in-a-row and Granagh/Ballingarry, the county intermediate hurling championship title for the first time in 18 years in 2023 and the success of the camogie U14 and 16 sides in 2024 and 2025. Lohn O’Connor will be remembered as a true GAA/Camogie Gael in Granagh/Ballingarry. His death is sincerely regretted by all in Granagh/Ballingarry GAA Club. To his wife Marie (née Maher), brothers Donie, Billy, Pat and Tom sisters Nora, Kathleen Maura, Anne, Teresa and Bridget, brothers in law, sisters in law, aunts, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, extended family, neighbours and many friends. Sympathy is extended.
