Granagh/Ballingarry down league winners to get West B Championship Back on track:
West Limerick Junior B Hurling Championship:
Group 1 Round 2
Granagh/Ballingarry 1-14 Feohanagh/Castlemahon 1-12
Holders Granagh/Ballingarry after suffering a one point 1-19 to 3-12 opening round defeat to Newcastlewest got their West Limerick Junior B Hurling Championship Group 1 campaign back on track with a hard fought two point 1-14 to 1-12 victory over gallant league champions Feohanagh/Castlemahon at sunny Killeedy GAA Club grounds in Raheenagh on Monday evening to revert the recent league final defeat to join Newcastlewest, Croagh/Kilfinny and Feohanagh/Castlemahon on two points on the league/championship table.
This re-match of the recent West Junior B Hurling League final was played in front of a good crowd who gave great support to their sides on an excellent pitch with Michael Browne of Dromcollogher/Broadford in charge. Holders Granagh/Ballingarry, despite playing into the wind were first off the mark with a well taken point from open play by John O’Grady. Both sides were guilty of wayward shooting in the next four minutes before white flags were traded from open play by Brian O’Sullivan on six minutes and Damen Brouder two minutes later to leave one between the sides, Granagh/Ballingarry 0-2, Feohanagh 0-1 on 8 minutes.
The next eight minutes belonged to Feohanagh/Castlemahon’s No 11, Damien Brouder, with a trio of white flags from open play left the league champions 2 ahead, 0-4 to 0-2 on 16 minutes. Wides were exchanged before a trio of unanswered white flags for Feohanagh/Castlemhon through Cathal Lynch from a placed ball on 18 minutes and Damien Brouder on 20 minutes and Cathal Lynch two minutes later from open play left five between the sides, Feohanagh/Castlemahon 0-7, Granagh/Ballingarry 0-2 on 22 minutes.
The Granagh/Ballingarry boys, far from being overawed, had a pair of white flags through Richie O’Keeffe from a placed ball on 23 minutes and 2023 County Intermediate Hurling Championship winning captain David Condron from open play on 24 minutes following good work by Donal O’Grady, Brian O’Sullivan and John O’Grady. Richie O’Keeffe finished past the Feohanagh/Castlemahon keeper Gerald Sexton on 26 minutes to leave the sides level for the second time, Granagh/Ballingarry 1-4, Feohanagh/Castlemhon 0-7 four minutes from the interval.
Granagh/Ballingarry with the wind at the backs, dominated the opening six minutes after the interval with a trio of white flags from open play through Richie O’Keeffe, Colm Noonan and David Condron before points were traded from open play by Cathal Lynch on seven minutes and John O’Grady two minutes later to leave three between the sides, Granagh/Ballingarry 1-9, Feohanagh/Castlemahon 0-9 on 39 minutes. The game was then held up for a number of minutes due to injury to players from both sides and when play got underway again white flags were traded by John Reidy from open play on 45 minutes and Richie O’Keeffe from a placed ball on 47 minutes before a trio of white flags for Granagh/Ballingarry through John O’Grady on 49 minutes and Richie O’Keeffe on 51 minutes from open play before Richie O’Keeffe split the uprights from a placed ball two minutes later to leave the holders from Knockfierna six ahead 1-13 to 0-10 on 53 minutes.
The Feohanagh/Castlemahon boys far from being overawed had a pair of white flags from placed ball courtesy of Christian Murrihy on 55 minutes and Cathal Lynch on 58 minutes before David Condron split the uprights from open play for the third time on 60 minutes to leave the Granagh/Ballingarry boys five ahead 1-14 to 0-12. To be fair to the Feohanagh/Castlemahon boys they never gave up and were rewarded with a goal from a placed ball by Christian Murrihy two minutes into added time which was too little too late for the boys in white and blue as the final whistle sounded shortly after to leave holders Granagh/Ballingarry two point 1-14 to 1-12 winners after a hard fought contest to take their first brace of points in Group 1 of the West Junior B Hurling Championship to get their campaign back on track to join Newcastlewest, Croagh/Kilfinny and Feohanagh/Castlemahon on two points on the Group 1 West Junior B Hurling League/Championship table.
