The Magpies hit a pair of wides before Jack Mulqueen split the uprights from open play on 30 minutes to send holders Granagh/Ballingarry in at the interval leading by four, 1-9 to 0-8. Newcastlewest, far from being overawed, had a cracking goal courtesy of their No 6 Jack O’Connor on 44 minutes, followed up by a white flag from a 65 by Cathal Hayes a minute later to reduce the deficit to six, Granagh/Ballingarry 3-12, Newcastlewest 1-12 at the end of the third quarter at the water break.
