Late Two Pointers by Murphy and O’Flynn Earn Granagh Ballingarry A Share of the Spoils
East City West Junior A Football League, Group 2, Round 1:
Granagh Ballingarry 2-16 St. Kierans 3-13
A pair of two pointers from open play, by Paudie Murphy and Luke Flynn on 58 and 60 minutes, paved the way for a 2-16 to 3-13 draw for Granagh Ballingarry, with St. Kieran’s in the much delayed East City West Junior A Football League round 1 tie, after a thrilling 34 score contest at sunny Coolcappa on Tuesday 8th April.
The game was played in front of a small crowd on a well aid out pitch with Seamus Hayes of Mungret St. Paul’s in charge. It was the Granagh Ballingarry boys’ first outing in the competition, having received a walkover from Monaleen, while the St. Kieran’s boys recorded a three point, 2-9 to 2-6 victory over Ballybrown in round 2. Both sides lined out minus a member of key players but the players on duty produced 60 minutes of exciting fare under the new Gaelic football rules with the issue in doubt right up to the final whistle. Granagh Ballingarry made all the early running with a trio of white flags from open play in as many minutes through Jack Cagney in his first game since his return from Australia, Paudie Murphy and Jack Hartnett before a pair of white flags for the home side, from open play courtesy of Oisín Ryan on five minutes and Anthony Molyneaux two minutes later to leave one between the sides, Granagh Ballingarry 0-3, St. Kieran’s 0-2 on seven minutes. The St. Kieran’s boys now began to up their game with a smashing Luke Corrigan green flag on 8 minutes, followed up with white flags from open play, courtesy of Cathal O’Connor on 9 minutes Jack Mulqueen two minutes later to leave the Saints four ahead, 1-4 to 0-3 on 11 minutes. Then St. Kieran’s keeper Con Enright made two top class saves from Jack Cagney and Jack McMahon before white flags were traded from open play by Jack McMahon on 12 minutes and Anthony Molyneaux on 13 minutes, Jack Cagney on 15 minutes and Oisín Cummane two minutes later to leave St. Kieran’s still four ahead 1-7 to 0-5 on 17 minutes. The home side dominated the next six minutes with a trio of white flags from open play, courtesy of Oisín Cummane, Anthony Molyneaux and Oisín Cummane again before Granagh Ballingarry hit back with a trio of white flags, courtesy of Paudie Murphy from placed balls on 24 minutes and Jack McMahon from open play two minutes later to leave four between the sides, St. Kieran’s 1-9, Granagh Ballingarry 0-8 on 26 minutes. The home side finished the opening half strong with a pair of white flags from open play, courtesy of Anthony Molyneaux on 28 minutes and Oisín Cummane on 30 minutes to send the Saints in at the interval leading by six, 1-11 to 0-8.
Anthony Molyneaux increased the St. Kieran’s boys’ advantage to nine when he converted a penalty in the second minute after the interval before white flags were traded by Paudie Murphy from a placed ball on 34 minutes and Oisín Ryan from open play two minutes later to leave nine between the sides, St. Kieran’s 2-12, Granagh Ballingarry 0-9 on 36 minutes. A couple of wides were exchanged before Paudie Murphy won a point back for Granagh Ballingarry from a placed ball on 38 minutes before points were traded from open play by Paudie Murphy on 40 minutes and substitute Fionn Gleeson two minutes later to leave eight between the sides, St. Kieran’s 2-13, Granagh Ballingarry 0-11 on 42 minutes. Then referee Seamus Hayes awarded his second penalty of the second half this time to Granagh Ballingarry which Con Enright saved from Granagh Ballingarry’s no 11 Jack Cagney, only for Cagney to finish the rebound to the back of the St. Kieran’s net on 53 minutes cancelled out by Cathal McEnery two minutes later to leave eight again between the sides, St. Kieran’s 3-13, Granagh Ballingarry 1-11 at the end of the third quarter. The Granagh Ballingarry far from being overawed dominated in all sections in the final quarter with a well taken poing from open play by Jack Hartnett on 47 minutes, followed up by a second green flag by Jack Cagney on 51 minutes and following six minutes of scoreless a pair of two pointers from open play by Paudie Murphy and Luke Flynn on 58 and 60 minutes sealed a thrilling 2-16 to 3-13 draw for Granagh Ballingarry in a thrilling 34 score contest between two fine sporting sides. Granagh Ballingarry scored 2-12 from play which included (2 x2 pointers) and 0-2 from frees. St. Kieran’s scored 2-13 from play and a penalty goal.

Strong First Half Performance Vital to Granagh Ballingarry Ten Point Win

Granagh Ballingarry continued their unbeaten run in Group 2 of the East City West Junior A Football League at Ballingarry on Saturday with a ten point victory over gallant Ballybrown thanks to a strong first half performance going in at the interval by fourteen points 1-15 to 0-4 to go joint top of the table on five points with St. Kieran’s.
The game was played in dry, cold conditions on an excellent pitch with Ger Riordan of Crecora Manister in charge. The home side, Granagh Ballingarry made all the early running with a pair of white flags from open play, courtesy of Paudie Murphy and Michael Russell in the opening five minutes cancelled out by Jamie Behan from open play on 6 minutes and Bobby Smith from a placed ball two minutes later for 0-2 each on 8 minutes. The next 5 minutes was all Granagh Ballingarry with a Jack Cagney white flag from open play, a Paudie Murphy 2 pointer from a placed from a placed ball followed by a cracking Jack Cagney goal before white flags were traded from open play by Michael Griffin on 14 minutes and Paudie Murphy a minute later, to leave the home side Granagh Ballingarry six ahead 1-6 to 0-3 at the end of the first quarter. Then a pair of white flags for Granagh Ballingarry from open play, courtesy of Jack Cagney on 17 minutes and Paudie Murphy on 19 minutes, followed up by a pair of 2 pointers from play by Eoin Horgan on 20 and 23 minutes to extend the boys in black and green advantage to twelve 1-12 to 0-3. Granagh Ballingarry keeper David Clancy made a top class save by Bobby Smith on 25 minutes before Smith split the uprights from open a minute later to reduce the deficit to eleven on 26 minutes. The final four minutes of the one-sided opening half belonged to Granagh Ballingarry’s no 11 Jack Cagney with a trio of white flags, 2 frees, 1 play, to send the home side Granagh Ballingarry in at the interval leading by fourteen, 1-15 to 0-4. Ballybrown, with the wind at their backs, far from being overawed by the opening 30 minutes, fourteen point deficit kicked four unanswered points courtesy of Sam Healy on 35 minutes, Bobby Smith on 40 minutes, Michael Griffin on 45 from open play followed by a Michael Griffin pointed 45 five minutes later to reduce the deficit to ten, 1-15 to 0-8 on 50 minutes. Both sides were guilty of inaccurate shooting in the final ten minutes and failed to add to their total. At the final whistle the home side Granagh Ballingarry were ten points, 1-15 to 0-8 winners, despite being held scoreless for the end of the second half to go joint top of the table on 5 points with St. Kieran’s and will have to improve on their second half performance ahead of their next outing against East Limerick side Fedamore on next Tuesday 22nd April in Fedamore at 7pm.

Duff Late Point Earn Limerick A Share of the Spoils Munster U20 Hurling Championship Round 3:

Well done to manager Evan Loftus and all involved with the Limerick U20 hurling on their thrilling 1-13 to 0-16 draw with Waterford in round 3 of the Munster Championship, courtesy of a well taken point in the final minute of normal time by substitute Sean Duff in front of a good crowd at Fraher Field, Dungarvan on Wednesday evening to go joint top of the table with neighbours Clare on 3 points. The Treaty boys’ next outing in the competition is on Wednesday 23rd April against neighbours Cork in Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale at 7.30pm.

Munster Minor Hurling Championship, Round 3:

10th Team Limerick Clean-Up:
The 10th year of the longest one day clean up in Ireland, Team Limerick Clean-Up (TLC) is set to take place on Good Friday, 18th April across Limerick city and county. Founders of the Team Limerick Clean-Up initiative, JP McManus, Paul O’Connell and Helen O’Connell are urging volunteers to sign up early at www.teamlimerick/cleanup.ie and help make this the best TLC yet. This year, participants in TLC 10 are encouraged to bring a friend and involve any new neighbours in the community to come along and join in making Limerick a cleaner and more environmentally friendly County. The popular tea and coffee gathering after the clean-up will also be held in locations throughout the City and County. Last year’s TLC marked the largest participation from all walks of life, with people from schools, colleges, GAA clubs, Munster rugby to business charities and nursing homes.

Limerick, after suffering an opening round defeat to Clare, 1-17 to 1-9, got their Munster Minor Football Championship Phase/Campaign back on track with an impressive 8 point, 2-14 to 1-12 victory over Tipperary at Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale on Monday evening and can now look forward to the next round with confidence against Waterford.
