Granagh-Ballingarry after suffering two straight seven point defeats on the same 1-18 to 0-14 scoreline to Newcastle West and Bruff got their Limerick County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship (Michael Fox Memorial Cup) campaign back on track with a deserved hard-fought three point 2-20 to 2-17 victory over previously unbeaten, gallant Garryspillane at Fitzgerald Park, Kilmallock on Wednesday evening to go third on the league championship table on two points with Blackrock and Bruff who have a game in hand due to be played on Friday 23rd August in Kilmallock at 6.30pm.
This South v West Round 3 County Premier Intermediate hurling championship tie was played in ideal conditions on an excellent pitch in front of a good crowd who gave great support to their sides with David Deady of Bruree in charge. The Bouncers were forced to line out minus Hugh Flanagan and John English and Granagh-Ballingarry David Condron but welcomed back Cathal O’Keeffe and Damian O’Donovan, who did not start last time out against Newcastle West. Granagh-Ballingarry dominated the opening seven minutes at Kilmallock with four unanswered white flags courtesy of Luke Flynn, Sean O’Connor, free, Darragh Casey and Sean O’Connor before Calvin Sheehan finally opened the Garryspillane boys’ account when he split the uprights following a good solo run to leave three between the sides, Granagh-Ballingarry 0-4, Garryspillane 0-1 on 9 minutes. Damien O’Donovan extended the Granagh-Ballingarry boys’ advantage to four with a will taken point from open play on 10 minutes before Ryan Tobin cut through the Granagh-Ballingarry defence a minute later to finish past keeper Denis O’Connor to reduce the deficit to the minimum Granagh-Ballingarry 0-5, Garryspillane 1-1 on 11 minutes. Then white flags were traded from open play by Cathal O’Keeffe on 12 minutes and Shane Ryan on 13 minutes before Eoin Lynch got inside the Garryspillane boys’ defence two minutes later only to see his strike for goal come back off the crossbar to leave still one between the sides, Granagh-Ballingarry 0-6, Garryspillane 1-2 at the end of the first quarter. A couple of wides were exchanged before the Granagh-Ballingarry boys upped their game and dominated for a six minute spell with a well taken point from open play by Sean O’Connor followed up a minute later by a Luke Flynn green flag and a pair of white flags by Sean O’Connor from placed balls to extend the boys from Knockfierna advantage to seven, 1-9 to 1-2 on 22 minutes. The Garryspillane boys far from being overawed had a trio of white flags in as many minutes through Shane Ryan from a placed ball and Bryan Heavey and Ciaran Sheehan from open play to reduce the deficit to four, Granagh-Ballingarry 1-9, Garryspillane 1-6 on 26 minutes. The final four minutes plus of this well-contested opening half saw white flags traded by Sean O’Connor from open play on 29 minutes, Colin Ryan on 30 minutes and Luke Flynn a minute later from open play to leave four still between the sides, Granagh-Ballingarry 1-11, Garryspillane 1-7 at the interval. Bryan Heavey from open play and Sean O’Connor from a placed ball traded white flags in the opening two minutes after the interval to leave four again between the sides. The Bouncers hit four wides in as many minutes before white flags were traded by Sean O’Connor from a placed ball on 37 minutes, Bryan Heavey on 38 minutes before Eoin Lynch pressured a Garryspillane clearance and laid off to Sean O’Connor who finished past keeper Adam Sheehan for the Granagh-Ballingarry boys’ second green flag to extend their advantage to seven, 2-13 to 1-9 on 41 minutes. Bryan Heavey on 42 minutes and Ciaran Sheehan on 43 minutes won points back from open play for the Bouncers before a pair of white flags for Granagh-Ballingarry courtesy of Sean O’Connor from a placed ball on 45 minutes and Luke Flynn from open play on 46 minutes were cancelled out by Dylan O’Shea from a placed ball on 47 minutes and open play a minute later to leave five between the sides, Granagh-Ballingarry 2-15, Garryspillane 1-16 on 48 minutes. Garryspillane’s No. 6 Dylan O’Shea landed his third straight white flag this time from open play on 49 minutes to close the gap to four before four white flags for the Granagh-Ballingarry boys in a six minute spell through Darragh Casey (play), Sean O’Connor (2 frees) and Luke Flynn (play) to extend the boys from Knockfierna advantage to eight, 2-19 to 1-14 on 55 minutes. The Garryspillane boys far from being overawed had a Shane Ryan goal on 56 minutes followed by a trio of white flags through Shane Ryan (free) on 58 minutes and Dylan O’Shea (two) from open play on 59 minute and a placed ball two minutes later to reduce the deficit to two, Granagh-Ballingarry 2-19, Garryspillane 2-17 a minute into added time. The Garryspillane boys mounted a couple of attacks in the final minutes of added time in search of the green flag but could find no way past a firm Granagh-Ballingarry defence with the closing score a well taken point from play by Granagh-Ballingarry’s Damien O’Donovan three minutes into added time seal a deserved three point 2-20 to 1-17 victory for the boys from Knockfierna to get their County Premier Intermediate hurling championship campaign back on track after going under to Newcastle West and Bruff in the opening two rounds by seven points on the score 1-18 to 0-14 scoreline to go third on the County Premier Intermediate hurling championship league table on two points with Bruff and Blackrock who play their game in hand on Friday 23rd August in Fitzgerald Park, Kilmallock at 6.30pm. Garryspillane will be hoping to get their championship campaign back on track when they play table toppers Newcastle West in round 4 while Granagh-Ballingarry can look forward in confidence to their next outing against bottom of the table Na Piarsaigh on Sunday 1st September in Clarina at 4pm. Athea after losing to Kilteely-Dromkeen in the opening round recorded their second win in Group 1 of the Limerick County Premier Junior A Football Championship at Newcastle West on Saturday evening with a hard fought five point, 0-13 to 0-8 victory over gallant Granagh-Ballingarry, suffering their second straight defeat after defeating Mungret-St. Paul’s in the opening round. This third round county premier junior a football championship was played in ideal conditions on an excellent pitch in front of a small crowd with Donncha O’Callaghan of Feohanagh-Castlemahon in charge.
The opening 8 minutes at Newcastle West were close and exciting with play flowing from end to end and white flags traded from open play by Jack Hartnett and TJ Hunt, Luke Flynn and Andrew O’Riordan for 0-2 each. Then a pair of white flags from the Athea boys courtesy of TJ Hunt from a placed ball on 10 minutes and corner back Tommy Quaid from open play on 14 minutes were cancelled out by Aaron Smith from a placed ball on 19 minutes and Jack Cagney from open play two minutes later to level for the third time at 0-4 each on 21 minutes. Then after four minutes of scoreless play a pair of white flags for the Athea boys through Shane Mulvihill on 27 minutes and Dylan Griffin on 30 minutes to send the boys in maroon and white in at the interval leading by two 0-6 to 0-4.
In the second minute after the interval the Granagh-Ballingarry keeper brought off a top class save from Athea No. 14 Andrew O’Riordan at the expense of a 45 which was kicked wide. The next 17 minutes were again close and exciting with white flags traded by Jack O’Connor (play) on 33 minutes and Edward Sheehy play on 35 minutes, Edward Sheehy play on 38 minutes, TJ Hunt free 41 minutes, Shane Mulvihill play on 43 minutes and Aaron Smith free on 46 minutes, Jack Cagney play on 48 minutes and Andrew O’Riordan play two minutes later to leave two still between the sides Athea 0-10, Granagh-Ballingarry 0-8 on 50 minutes. Then a pair of white flags from open play by Dylan Griffin on 52 minutes and substitute Mark Reidy three minutes later extended the Athea boys’ advantage to four 0-12 to 0-8 on 55 minutes. On 57 minutes Granagh-Ballingarry David Clancy brought off his second top class save of the game, this time from TJ Hunt before Hunt split the uprights from open play on 60 minutes to seal a hard fought five point 0-13 to 0-8 victory for the Athea boys to take their second brace of points in the County Premier Junior A Football Championship to go joint second on the table on four points with Feenagh-Kilmeedy, who they play in the next round on Saturday 24th August in Tournafulla at 6.30pm. Granagh-Ballingarry on two points with Kilteely-Dromkeen play table toppers Cappagh also on Saturday at 6.30pm in Newcastle West where a win is a must for the boys in black and green to stay in contention for a quarter-final spot. Holders Granagh/Ballingarry made a winning start in defence of their West Junior B Hurling Championship (Mary Sexton Memorial Cup) title with a hard fought one point victory over unlucky Feohanagh/Castlemahon suffering their second defeat after going under to Feenagh/Kilmeedy in the opening round at St. Kierans GAA club grounds in Coolcappa on Sunday evening.
This Round 2 West Junior B Hurling Championship Group 1 Round 2 tie which was a re-match of last year’s decider won by Granagh/Ballingarry by five points, 1-13 to 0-11, after a replay was played in ideal conditions in front of a good crowd for a B game with John Paul Kiely of Fedamore in charge. Granagh/Ballingarry made all the early running with a pair of white flags courtesy of Peter Hughes and John O’Grady in the opening four minutes before Jamie Butler opened the Feohanagh/Castlemahon’s boys’ account a minute later when he landed a fine point from open play to leave one between the sides Granagh/Ballingarry 0-2, Feohanagh/Castlemahon 0-1 on five minutes. This after five minutes of scoreless play following good work by Peter Hughes and Jack Hartnett, John O’Grady finished past Feohanagh/Castlemahon keeper Gearóid Sexton to leave the Granagh/Ballingarry boys four ahead, 1-2 to 0-1 on 11 minutes. Then Jamie Butler split the uprights from a 65 on 17 minutes before green flags were traded by Darren Roche on 18 minutes and Jack Hartnett a minute later to leave it 2-3 to 1-3 in favour of the holders Granagh/Ballingarry on 19 minutes. The Granagh/Ballingarry boys now began to up their game with four unanswered white flags in as many minutes through Pat Carroll (free), Peter Hughes (play) and Pat Carrroll (2 play) to extend their advantage to seven, 2-7 to 1-3 on 23 minutes. The Feohanagh/Castlemahon boys far from open play through Conor Noonan on 25 minutes, Damian Brouder on 26 minutes, Oisin Carvill on 28 minutes and Damian Brouder again a minute later to reduce the deficit to three, 2-7 to 1-7 on 29 minutes. The holders finished the opening half strongly with a pointed free by Pat Carroll on 30 minutes followed up in added time by a second Jack Hartnett green flag following good work once more by Peter Hughes and a long range point from open play by No 6 Mark O’Shea to send the boys in black and green in at the interval leading by eight, 3-9 to 1-7. Then Granagh/Ballingarry’s second half substitute Thomas O’Donovan extended his side’s advantage to three with a well taken point from out near the sideline on 58 minutes. Then Jamie Butler from a placed ball on 59 minutes and Oisin Carvill from open play two minutes later, raised white flags for the Feohanagh boys to reduce the deficit to one, which was too little, too late for the boys in white and blue as the final whistle sounded shortly after to leave holders Granagh/Ballingarry one point 3-14 to 2-16 if only just, winners of the two West Junior B Hurling League/Championship Group 1 points on offer to go second on the table on two points behind Feenagh/Kilmeedy on four who have two games played. After a most enjoyable hard fought contest between two fine sporting Junior B sides. Dromin/Athlacca recorded their second win in Group 1 of the Limerick County Minor B Hurling Championship with a comfortable victory over neighbours Granagh/Ballingarry at Banogue on Saturday evening. This impressive victory for the Dromin/Athlacca boys see them fourth on the league/championship table on four points behind Caherline, Ballybrown and Belville Gaels while Granagh/Ballingarry fielding mostly U15 players have now made their exit from the competition.
Thank you to Shane Twomey, Denis O’Connor and Shane Mulqueen for the time and great work they put into this youthful minor side in the course of the season.

Both sides will enter tonight’s game pointless after suffering two straight defeats, Granagh Ballingarry to Ballybrown and Caherline and South Liberties/Crecora/Manister to Belville Gaels and Caherline. Granagh Ballingarry will aim to get their Limerick County Premier Junior A Football Championship campaign back on track this Saturday 17th August when they play Athea in Newcastle West at 6.45pm. Both sides enter Saturday evening’s game second in the table on two points, with Feenagh Kilmeedy and Kilteely Dromkeen behind Cappagh on four points. Granagh Ballingarry defeated 2023 County Junior A Champions, Mungret St. Paul’s by six points, 4-7 to 0-13 in their opening game but suffered a seven point 1-10 to 0-6 defeat to 2022 and 2023 defeated finalists Feenagh Kilmeedy last time, but while the Athea boys, after going under to Kilteely Dromkeen in their opening game got their campaign back on track last time out with a one point 0-11 to 1-7 victory over Mungret/St. Paul’s. Your support for the boys in black and green and the management team would be appreciated at Newcastle West on this Saturday evening at 6.45pm to cheer them on in their bid to get their County Premier Junior A Football Championship Group 1 campaign back on track to stay in contention for a quarter final spot.

The next Limerick County GAA Clubs draw is on Saturday 31st August with a top prize of €10,000. Strictly Come Dancing Volunteers in Training:
Thank you to all the 28 volunteers who are now in training once a week for the Granagh Ballingarry GAA Camogie and Ladies Football Strictly Come Dancing competition which takes place on Saturday 12th October in the Charleville Park Hotel. 14 couples will take to the dance floor on the night to battle it out for the title with all money raised going to the further development of facilities for our club’s future and current players. Training consists of a 45 minute slot a week for 12 weeks with a dance instructor who will pair individuals off into 14 couples. Each couple will be set up with an i-donate page online where money raised will correlate to votes on the night. The lucky dips of €20 went to Esther O’Doherty, Cartledge promoter online, Gerard Cronin promoter Dinny As Bar, Ballingarry, Martha O’Connor promoter Adrian Farragher, Stephen Stapleton promoter Buckley’s Bar, Ballingarry.
The next draw for a jackpot of €6,100 will be held on Saturday 10th August in Condron’s Bar, Ballingarry.
Tickets are €2 each or three for €5 and are on sale in local shops, bars and from promoters. You can also play the weekly draw online and the link is available on the club’s Facebook or Twitter page which finishes at 6pm every Saturday.
