Bruff off to a winning start with 7point win

Bruff whose opening round with Blackrock was deferred to Friday 23rd August, got their Limerick County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship (Michael Fox Memorial Cup) campaign off to a winning start with a deserved hard fought 7 point 1-18 to 0-14 victory over gallant Granagh-Ballingarry suffering their second defeat after going under to Newcastle West in the opening round on the same scoreline at Paddy Carroll Park, Ballyagran on Thursday evening.
This South v West Round 2 County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship tie was played in dry, windy conditions on an excellent pitch in front of a big crowd who gave great support to their sides with Donnacha O’Callaghan of Feohanagh-Castlemahon in charge. Granagh-Ballingarry were forced to start minus Damie O’Donovan and Cathal O’Keeffe but welcomed back Sean O’Connor from the states??? While Bruree lined out at near full strength.
The opening four minutes at Ballyagran belonged to Bruff No. 15 Tadgh Body with a trio of white flats (1 play, 2 frees). Wides were exchanged before points were traded. Bruff No. 11 Chris Browne from open play on 6 minutes and Granagh-Ballingarry keeper Denis O’Connor from a 110 metre placed ball on 8 minutes, Darragh Butler (play) on 10 minutes and Sean O’Gorman (play) for the Granagh-Ballingarry boys through first cousins Darragh Casey on 14 minutes and Luke Flynn a minute later to leave one between the sides, Bruff 0-5, Granagh-Ballingarry 0-4 at the end of the first quarter. Then the game turned nicely in favour of the South Limerick boys in the next three minutes with a well taken second point from open play by Chris Browne on 16 minutes followed up two minutes later by a cracking Darragh Butler goal to leave five between the sides, Bruff 1-6, Granagh-Ballingarry 0-4 on 18 minutes. Then after three minutes of scoreless play Darragh Casey from open play on 22 minutes and Sean O’Connor from a placed ball on 24 split the uprights for the Granagh-Ballingarry boys before white flags were traded, Chris Browne play on 25 minutes and Sean O’Connor 65 on 27 minutes, Sean O’Connor free on 29 minutes and Paul O’Riordan play on 30 minutes before the final score of this well contested opening half fell to Sean Murnane of Bruff who split the uprights from open play to send the boys in red in at the interval leading by four 1-9 to 0-8 despite playing into the wind.
Eoin Horgan and Paul Browne traded white flags from open play in the opening three minutes after the interval before points were traded by Tadgh Body free on 35 minutes and sub Damien O’Donovan on 37 minutes, Tadgh Body free on 39 minutes and Luke Flynn free on 42 minutes, Kevin Bonnar play on 55 minutes Sean O’Connor free on 47 minutes, Sean Finn play on 48 minutes and Sean O’Connor free two minutes later to leave still four between the sides, Bruff 1-14, Granagh-Ballingarry 0-13 on 50 minutes. Then after four minutes of scoreless play Sean O’Connor split the uprights for the sixth time from a placed ball for Granagh-Ballingarry on 54 minutes to close the gap to three, Bruff 1-14, Granagh-Ballingarry 0-14 wit six minutes of normal time remaining. The final six minutes plus was all Bruff with the wind at their backs they dominated in all sections with white flags from open play through Chris Browne on 55 minutes, Danny O’Leary on 57 minutes, Paul O’Riordan on 58 minutes and Tadgh Body (free) on 61 minutes to bring his tally for the game to 0-6 (1 play, 5 frees), without reply from the Granagh-Ballingarry boys. At the final whistle Bruff were worthy seven point 1-18 to 0-14 winners of the County Premier Intermediate Hurling League Championship points on offer to go third on the league/championship table on 2 points with a game in hand against Blackrock, two behind Garryspillane and Newcastle West on four, who they play in round 3 this Saturday 10th August in Ballingarry at 7pm. Granagh-Ballingarry are pointless at the bottom of the table with na Piarsaigh and Glenroe who have games in hand will need to regroup ahead of their next outing against joint table toppers on 4 points, with Newcastle West, Garryspillane also on this Saturday in Bruff at 7pm, where they will be hoping to record their first win to get their Premier County Intermediate Hurling Championship campaign back on track.

Granagh-Ballingarry will make the first defence of the West Junior B Hurling Championship title (Mary Sexton Memorial Cup) when they clash with Feohanagh-Castlemahon on Sunday 11th August at 7pm in Killeedy GAA Club in Raheenagh which in a rematch of last year’s decider won by five points, 1-13 to 0-11 by Granagh-Ballingarry after a replay in Raheenagh on Sunday 1st October. The 2024 West Junior B Hurling Championship is played on a league system in two groups of five.
Group 1: Knockaderry, Tournafulla, Feohanagh-Castlemahon, Feenagh-Kilmeedy and Granagh-Ballingarry.
Group 2: Adare, Croagh-Kilfinny, Askeaton-Kilcornan-Desmonds, St. Kierans and Newcastle West.
Each team play the other once with the top team in each group to qualify for the semi-final and the second and third teams for the quarter finals. Quarter final draw second team in group 1 v third team in group 2 and the second team in group 2 play third team in Group 1. In the opening series of Group 1 games on Monday eveningFeenagh/Kilmeedy defeated Feohanagh/Castlemahon 0-23 to 1-11 and Knockaderry defeated Tournafulla’s 3-12 to 0-8 and Granagh/Ballingarry had a bye.
2024 Form:
Granagh/Ballingarry who have won 18 drew two and lost two of their 22 games played since they defeated Monagea 4-20 to 1-8 in the opening round of Group 1 in the West Junior B Hurling League on Sunday 2nd April 2023 finished top of Group 1 in this season’s West Junior B Hurling League on 9 points to qualify for a final meeting with neighbours Bruree who they defeated to claim back-to-back West Junior B Hurling League title to qualify straight for a County Junior A Hurling League Final meeting with east winners South Liberties who they were most unluck to go under to by two points.

The next draw will be held on Saturday 31st August with a top prize of €10,000. There are a host of other prizes to be won 2nd €3,000, 3rd €2,000, 4th €1000, 5th executive star prize, 6th to 9th €500, 10th to 13th €250, 14th to 30th €100. Strictly Come Dancing:
Granagh/Ballingarry GAA Camogie and Ladies Football Clubs are coming together to organise a night of fun and dancing on Saturday 12th October in the Charleville Park Hotel for Strictly Come Dancing 2024. 14 couples will take to the dance floor to battle it out the title with all money raised going to the further development of facilities for our club’s future and current start. Firstly, the club is looking for volunteers to take to the dance floor to dance on the night, so what will this until for you?
Training once a week with the dance instructor.
The dance instructor will pair individuals off.

€6,100 Jackpot on Saturday:
There was no winner of the €6,000 jackpot in the Granagh/Ballingarry GAA Club lottery draw on Saturday 3rd August in Buckleys Bar, Ballingarry. The numbers drawn were 10, 11, 20 and 23. The lucky dips of €20 went to Esther O’Doherty, Cartledge promoter online, Gerard Cronin promoter Dinny As Bar, Ballingarry, Martha O’Connor promoter Adrian Farragher, Stephen Stapleton promoter Buckley’s Bar, Ballingarry.
The next draw for a jackpot of €6,100 will be held on Saturday 10th August in Condron’s Bar, Ballingarry.
