Granagh-Ballingarry GAA Club Executive, Members and Supporters are saddened to hear of the passing of Life President Jimmy Stapleton. Jimmy made a huge contribution to our club over many decades from his playing career right through to coaching and administration. On the field, Jimmy won a West Junior Hurling Championship in 1957 & 1958 and had the honour of representing Granagh-Ballingarry on the Western Gaels Team that won the County Senior Hurling Championship in 1961 & 1962. Jimmy captained the Limerick Senior Hurling Team in the 1962 National League game against Wexford. He captained Granagh in the 1967 West Final losing out by a single point to Knockaderry on the day. Jimmy played in two more West finals in 1973 & 1974 winning in 1974 and bringing his playing days to a close.
On the completion of his playing career, Jimmy moved on to coaching and management, and quickly managed the Granagh Junior hurling Team to the County title in 1976. He then managed Granagh to the West Senior Final of 1981 against Tournafulla. Jimmy’s coaching career spanned all teams from Bord Na nOg to Adult and everything in between.
A very accomplished and capable administrator, Jimmy was Chairman of the old Granagh club in the 80’s and held the Treasurer role in the 70’s. Jimmy was the first Chairman of the Granagh-Ballingarry Bord Na nOg which was formed in the early 80’s and a role that is currently held by his son Steven.
Jimmy was joint treasurer of the West Board along with the late Jim Quaid during 1980 & 1981. He then served on the disciplinary committee for 14 years and was later honoured as Life President of the West Limerick GAA Board. He received life service awards from the West Board and Granagh-Ballingarry GAA club in 2015.
Jimmy was one of the founding members of the very successful Granagh-Ballingarry Camogie Club and served the club in various roles throughout the years.
Our condolences to Nuala, Kieran, Seamus, Peter, Niall, David, Steven, Noel and extended family, relatives and friends.
