CROAGH/KILFINNY WIN THRILLER BY A POINT!
Limerick County Intermediate Hurling Championship
Group 2 Round 1
Croagh/Kilfinny…………….0-17
Granagh/Ballingarry………………..0-16
The first ever meeting of neighbours Croagh/Kilfinny and Granagh/Ballingarry in the Limerick County Intermediate Hurling Championship went the way of last year’s defeated finalists Croagh/Kilfinny by a point 0-17 to 0-16 after a thrilling 33 score contest at sun-drenched Knockaderry on Sunday afternoon.
Richard Moloney of Bruff took charge of this opening round of the County Intermediate Hurling Championship, Group 2 tie played on an excellent pitch in front of a big crowd who gave great support to their teams who in turn produced fine passages of hurling, good movement, great scores with the issue in doubt right up to the final whistle.
The Croagh/Kilfinny boys made all the early running with a pair of white flags from open play through their No. 11 Brian Hannon in the opening three minutes before Cathal O’Keeffe opened the Granagh/Ballingarry Boys’ account when he split the uprights following a good solo run to leave it 0-2 to 0-1 in favour of the Croagh/Kilfinny boys on 4 minutes.
Croagh/Kilfinny dominated the next eight minutes with a trio of white flags through former All Star Seamus Hickey (play) on 7 minutes, Brian Hannan (play) on 10 minutes and Cian O’Carroll (free) on 12 minutes before Cathal O’Keeffe finally ended 8 minutes without a Granagh/Ballingarry score when he split the uprights for the second time from open play on 13 minutes to reduce the deficit to 3, 0-5 to 0-2. Then the Croagh/Kilfinny boys had a pair of white flags from placed balls by their No. 13 Cian O’Carroll on 14 and 15 minutes before points were traded by Damien O’Donovan from open play on 17 minutes and Cian O’Carroll from a place ball a minute later to leave five between the sides, Croagh/Kilfinny 0-8, Granagh/Ballingarry 0-3 on 18 minutes. Then white flags were traded by Josh O’Connor (play) on 20 minutes and Cathal O’Keeffe (play) on 22 minutes, Cian O’Carroll (free) on 25 minutes and Luke Flynn (play) on 27 minutes, Damien O’Donovan (free) on 29 minutes and Cian O’Carroll free on 30 minutes to leave it 0-11 to 0-6 in favour of the Croagh/Kilfinny boys at the interval.
The opening seven minutes after the interval were close and exciting with white flags traded from open play by Granagh/Ballingarry substitute Paudie Murphy on 31 minutes and Josh O’Connor on 32 minutes, Luke Flynn on 33 minutes and Brian Hannan on 35 minutes, Cian O’Carroll on 36 minutes and Damien O’Donovan a minute later to leave Croagh/Kilfinny still five ahead 0-14 to 0-9 on 37 minutes. Granagh/Ballingarry now began to up their game with a trio of white flags from open play through Cathal O’Keeffe on 39 and 42 minutes, Michael Russell on 45 minutes followed by a Damien pointed free on 47 minutes cancelled out from open play by James Lanigan a minute later to leave two between the sides, Croagh/Kilfinny 0-15, Granagh/Ballingarry 0-13 on 48 minutes. Then a pair of white flags for Croagh/Kilfinny through James Lanigan from open play on 51 minutes and Cian O’Carroll from a place ball on 53 minutes were cancelled out by Damien O’Donovan from open play on 55 minutes and Denis O’Connor from a 65 on 57 minutes before Damien O’Donovan split the uprights from a place ball on 59 minutes to reduce the deficit to one. Granagh/Ballingarry created a number of chances in the final few minutes to draw the game which they failed to convert at the final whistle. Croagh/Kilfinny were one point winners by 0-17 to 0-16 to take the two league points on offer and can now look forward with confidence to the next round against Pallasgreen three point 0-18 to 2-9 winners over Knockaderry on this Saturday August 6th in Mungret at 7pm.
