St. Patrick’s made a winning start to their County Junior A Football Championship campaign with a two point victory over gallant 2021 West and County Junior B champions Granagh/Ballingarry who were forced to field minus a number of key players due to injury and holidays on Friday evening at Sean Finns Park, Rathkeale, where the margin of victory for the Saints would have been far greater were it not for four top class saves, two in either half by veteran Granagh/Ballingarry keeper David Clancy.
The game was played in dry, windy conditions on an excellent pitch in front of 13 spectators with Michael Mann of Ballybrown in charge. St. Patrick’s with the wind at their backs were first off the mark with a well-taken pint by James Cross on 2 minutes. Then St. Patrick’s No. 9 Ben Shaughnessy cut through the Granagh/Ballingarry defence only to see his kick for goal saved brilliantly by Granagh/Ballingarry keeper David Clancy on 3 minutes. A couple of wides were exchanged before Brendan Scanlon extended the Saints’ advantage to two when he split the uprights following a good solo run on 5 minutes. Granagh/Ballingarry keeper David Clancy then brought off his second top class save in four minutes from Mark Phelan on 7 minutes before James Cross split the uprights for the second tie for St. Patrick’s a minute later to leave the city boys three ahead 0-3 to 0-0 on 8 minutes. Then Cathal O’Keeffe finally got Granagh/Ballingarry off the mark with a well taken pint from open play on 10 minutes to reduce the deficit to two. Then after 8 minutes of scoreless play Cathal O’Keeffe split the uprights for the second time for Granagh/Ballingarry to reduce the deficit to the minimum, St. Patrick’s 0-3, Granagh/Ballingarry 0-2 on 18 minutes. A couples of wides were exchanged before the first and only green flags of the game arrived on 23 minutes through St. Patrick’s No. 15 Sean Rice to leave four between the sides, St. Patrick’s 1-3, Granagh/Ballingarry 0-2. Seven minutes from the interval Brendan Scanlon had a pair of white flags from placed balls for St. Patrick’s on 26 and 28 minutes. Then Luke Flynn finally ended 12 minutes without a Granagh/Ballingarry score when he finished over the bar on 29 minutes. The half time whistle sounded to leave St. Patrick’s five ahead 1-5 to 0-3 at the interval.
Granagh/Ballingarry with the wind at their backs dominated the opening 8 minutes after the interval with a trio of unanswered white flags through Cathal O’Keeffe (play), Jack Cagney (free) and David Condron (play) to reduce the deficit to two, St. Patrick’s 1-5, Granagh/Ballingarry 0-6 on 38 minutes. A couples of wides were exchanged before a pair of white flags for St. Patricks through Brendan Scanlon (free) on 40 minutes and Ben Shaughnessy (play) a minute later to extend the City boys’ advantage to four, 1-7 to 0-6 on 41 minutes. Then Granagh/Ballingarry keeper David Clancy made his third to class save from St. Patrick’s No. 13 Evan O’Connor on 43 minutes before a trio of unanswered white flags for Granagh/Ballingarry through Jack Cagney from placed balls on 15 and 20 minutes and open play 2 minutes to reduce the deficit to the minimum St. Patrick’s 1-7, Granagh/Ballingarry 0-9 on 50 minutes. Seven minutes later Ben Shaughnessy split the uprights for the second tie for the St. Patrick’s boy to extend their advantage to two. The Granagh/Ballingarry boys created a couple of scoring chances in the final minutes, which they failed to convert to leave St. Patrick’s just 2point winners 1-8 to 0-9 to take the two County Junior A Football League Championship points on offer.
Granagh/Ballingarry will have to regroup ahead of their round 2 tie this Sunday 10th July at 7.30pm in Mungret, where they play Ahane, impressive 6-6 to 2-6 winners over Adare in the opening round while St. Patrick’s will aim for back-to-back wins against Hospital/Herbertstown also on Sunday evening in Caherelly at 7.30pm.

Dromin/Athlaca got their County U19 B hurling championship campaign off to a winning start with an impressive victory over a gallant Granagh/Ballingarry at Ballingarry on Tuesday, 28th June.
A good crowd watched this opening round U-19 tie played on an excellent pitch. Michael Browne of Dromcollogher/Broadford in charge. Paudie Murphy and Daniel Scully traded points from open play in the opening 2 minutes before a long-range point by Dromin/Athlacca No. 6 Shane Fitzgibbon on 3 minutes followed by a pair of green flags courtesy of Diarmuid Enright on 5 and 6 minutes to leave the visitors seven ahead 2-2 to 0-1. The Granagh/Ballingarry boys, far from being overawed, had a white flag from open play through Sean O’Gorman from open play on 7 minutes followed by a cracking Paudie Murphy got a minute later to reduce the deficit to three, Dromin/Athlacca 2-2, Granagh/Ballingarry 1-2 on 8 minutes. Then white flags were traded by Jack Fitzgibbon (play) on 9 minutes and Michael
Russell (free) on 10 minutes, Michael Russell (play) on 11 minutes and Jack Fitzgibbon (play) on 12 minutes before Fitzgibbon raised the Dromin/Athlacca boys’ third green flag, a minute later to leave it Dromin/Athlacca 3-4, Granagh/Ballingarry 1-4 on 13 minutes. Then white flags were traded from open play by Sean O’Gorman on 48 minutes and substitute John O’Keeffe on 49 minutes before Dromin/Athlacca No. 14 Jack Fitzgibbon split the uprights from on play on 50 minutes before substitute John O’Keeffe made his mark once more, when he raised the visitor’s fifth green flag on 52 minutes to leave it Dromin/Athlacca 5-14, Granagh/Ballingarry 1-13. The white flags were traded from open play by Brian Sheehy on 53 minutes and Jack Fitzgibbon on 55 minutes before a pair of white flags from open play for the Dromin/Athlacca boys through Cian Walsh o 57 minutes and Shane Fitzgibbon a minute later to leave it Dromin/Athlacca 5-17, Granagh/Ballingarry 1-14 o 58 minutes. Hearty congratulations to the Limerick senior hurlers, manager John Kiely, our own Donal O’Grady and the other members of the management team on their thrilling three-point 0-27 to 1-21 victory over gallant Galway at Croke Park on Sunday to qualify for their fourth All Ireland Final in five seasons against Leinster champions Kilkenny on Sunday 17th July in Croke Park at 3.30pm. In this the eight final meeting of the sides, a first since 2007, the boys in green and white will be aiming for their eleventh title and a first three in-a-row, a record by Cork, Tipperary and Kilkenny who lead the roll of honour with 36 titles and aiming for a first Liam MacCarthy Cup win since 2015.

The Granagh/Ballingarry GAA Club will receive an allocation of tickets for the Limerick v Kilkenny All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final on Sunday 17th July in Croke Park at 3.30pm.
We are inviting paid-up club draw members who are interested in going to the final to contact club secretary John Lynch, by email only, at secretary.granaghballingarry.limerickatgaa.ie on or before Monday 14th July at 5pm and please include the name(s) of the relevant club members you wish to enter in the draw. The following club members will have first option to buy tickets, officers of the Senior and Bord na nÓg teams, adult and Bord na nÓg management, club and county draw promoters, lottery committee players, first aid officers, etc. The remaining tickets will be drawn between paid-up members of the club draw on Wednesday 16th July in the clubhouse at 8pm. Members are asked for patience and understanding in the run-up to the final. Unfair and unrealistic demands will be dismissed so that as many members as possible can be accommodated.
