ALL THE FOOTBALL THEY PLAYED
Galtee Gaels 2 – 2 Garryspillane 1 – 5
The South Limerick under 12 C 2000 championship commenced in dramatic fashion at Knocklong on 26th of March where Garryspillane and Galtee Gaels played out a thrilling draw.
Anthony Moloney had his charges well primed for this game having arranged early season indoor training sessions at Anglesboro N.S.
Conor Moriarty had a goal in mind with his first shot on target. He got Galtee Gaels off to an encouraging start with a point. Garryspillane pressure yielded a point from a free and when Galtee Gaels had a defender out of action for a boot replacement they seized on the opportunity. Galtee Gaels custodian, Justin O’Brien, under pressure brought off a fine save but a bouncers forward was on hand to gather the clearance and raise a green flag.
Galtee Gaels under a lot of pressure at this stage produced a slick movement when their midfielder Richie Childs delivered to Conor Moriarty who set up John Lenihan for a low shot that was deflected for a 45. The resultant kick, taken by Moriarty, finished up in the net. Garryspillane replied with a point to lead 1 – 2 to 1 – 1 at the break.
The second half was a hard fought affair, for the most part dominated by the home side. Their big full forward was the key to a few scores as they extended their lead to four points 1 – 5 to 1 – 1 and shaped up like winners. In the last six minutes Galtee Gaels played their best football and exerted sustained pressure in front of the home goals. Moriarty received an inch perfect pass from Lenihan but the shot was saved at the expense of a 45. Conor hit the upright with the kick but shortly afterwards he added a point. A goal was now required to equalise. Another slick move was required and was supplied by Childs, Lenihan and Moriarty. The latter was pulled down within scoring range and he sent an unstoppable shot to the net.
Huge disappointment for Garryspillane and joy for Galtee Gaels who had experienced many defeats to the same oppositions. Seven games later Galtee Gaels were crowned south C champions.
Other players who received special mention on the match report were P.J. Moloney, Aoife Gallahue Eamon Moloney, Donnchadh O’Halloran, Karen Bailey, Tommy O’Dwyer, Mark Kavanagh who missed the start and his replacement Liam Roche.
