FR. CASEY’S GAA CLUB NOTES

Club Review 2021
As we start a new year it is worth taking a brief look back at 2021 and the great success stories that came from Fr. Casey’s teams at various grades. The future looks very bright within the club and hopefully in 2022 we can achieve the same levels of success. At adult level we capture both the U21 Premier and Junior A County Football titles, at Minor level we made it four in a row of County Premier titles and at Underage level our U15 Boys won both County & Feile titles with our U15 Girls runners-up in the same competitions.
Our Senior team began the league season with a win over Rathkeale 2-7 to 10 points and continued their winning ways with a win over Ballysteen and Adare and also a walkover from Drom/Broadford. Unfortunately with two losses in the semi-final to Monaleen and West Final to Newcastle West, this ended the league campaign for 2021. The team being trained by John Colbert with selectors Liam Galvin and Conor Mc Carthy won our first championship match by beating Galbally comprehensively 3-11 to 1-02. Next up we played a strong Newcastle West team and were beaten 3-11 to 0-11. Unfortunately we bowed out of the championship at the Quarter Final stage when we were beaten by Monaleen in the Gaelic Grounds on September 24th on a score line of 2-8 to 1-7. We look forward to further progression with our Senior Team in 2022.
Our Junior Team under the stewardship of Seamus Mc Namara, Michael Harnett and Sean O’Donnell played in the West Intermediate Football League beating Newcastle West and Glin and but recorded losses to Athea and Cappagh. Our championship campaign commenced on August 15th when we beat Newcastle West 3-9 to 0-06 points. We then got a walkover from Hospital which saw us into the quarter final against Kilteely/Dromkeen. An enthralling game where we came away with a one point win 0-10 to 0-09. Next up we played Croom in the Semi Final where a last minute goal secured the victory with a score line of 2-09 to 2-07. On October 30th with a huge number of supporters our team lined out in Tournafulla for the County Final. Again another fierce contest against local rivals Newcastle West saw a historic win with a score line of 2-8 to 1-7. It was very proud day for the players, management, our club and supporters and hopefully they will continue this form as they move up to play in the Intermediate ranks in 2022.
With a change in the grading structure this year, our Under 19 team started the championship very well with wins over Adare and Galbally and a walkover from Mungret. Next up was the county semi-final but unfortunately we were beaten by two points 0-7 points to 0-5 in Mick Neville Park. The Management Team for the Under 19’s was Sean O’Donnell, Ger Buckley, Michael Harnett and Tomas T.J. O’Connell.
Our Under 17 team under the management of Sean O’Donnell, Tom Nolan, John Boyle, Mike O’Shea and Norman Finn started their championship campaign with a loss to Mungret. However winning ways ensued, after league wins over Newcastle West, Monaleen, Kildimo/Pallaskenry and Galbally , we won the semi-final against Mungret on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-06. We played the county final on October 28th in Kilbreedy and had a comprehensive win over Galbally with the final score of 5-07 to 0-10.
Our Minor team eventually played the 2020 County Final that had fallen victim to Covid 19 on June 25th, 2021 in the Gaelic Grounds where a total of 200 spectators only were allowed to attend. Again a local derby meeting with Newcastle West saw a close encounter, however our boys dug deep and ground out a win to ensure the three in a row victory. Great credit is due to these young players and their management team of Sean O’Donnell, Ger Buckley, Michael Harnett and Tomas TJ O’Connell on this fantastic achievement.
Our Under 21 team under the stewardship of Daniel Daly, Killian Sweeney and Cormac Roche with assistance from Eoin Joy, Ronan Sweeney and Eoin Broderick started their campaign on November 5th
with a draw to St. Kierans, followed by a win over Na Piarsaigh and Monaleen. We then took on Mungret in the Semi Final and won by 0-13 to 2-05. A huge crowd of supporters made their way to Mick Neville Park on December 10th for the County Final vs Galbally and after an enthralling game, Fr. Casey’s came away victorious with a scoreline of 2-13 to 12 points to become Under 21 County Champions again for the 1st time since 2001.
At county level Fr. Casey’s were honoured to be represented by Adrian Enright and Cormac Roche at senior level and at minor level by Marc Nolan, Michael Kilbridge, Dylan O’Connor, Culann Quigley and Calum Boyle. Sean Kilbridge, Dylan Quirke and Eliah Riordan wore the green and white for the Under 20 team. We look forward to another great year with Fr. Casey’s teams going from strength to strength and our facilities improving year on year.
