Fr. Caseys travelled to Feenagh last Saturday evening to face Newcastle West in a top of the table clash. Both sides had already guaranteed quarter final spots with comfortable victories over Galbally but this would be a must tougher test. Newcastle West raced out of the traps and kicked 1-03 inside the opening 10 minutes. The deficit could have been worse only for a great save from Shane O’Connell, making up for an earlier error leading to the opening goal. Before the first water break, Fr. Caseys slotted over a well worked point from play with Robert Browne applying the finishing touches. A point from Adrian Enright and a converted free from Cormac Roche on the restart gave Fr. Caseys some confidence but four Newcastle West points stretched their lead to seven points as we entered the final five minutes of the half. A second Newcastle West goal as we headed for half time dealt Fr. Caseys a massive blow but a pointed free from Cormac Roche and another point from Adrian Enright kept the Abbeyfeale men in touch. The half time score was Fr. Caseys 0-05, Newcastle West 2-07.
A much improved second half display was needed and a long range free from Eliah Riordan followed by points from Cormac Roche and Adrian Enright seemed just the answer but a third Newcastle West goal would scupper all the hard work. The scores now became limited with Newcastle West content to hold possession given their commanding lead. Pointed frees from Adrian and Cormac kept the scoreboard ticking over with Newcastle West also raising another white flag. A point from play from Adrian Enright had the margin reduced to six points with 10 minutes remaining but unfortunately this would be the last Fr. Caseys score of the night. The last three points went the way of Newcastle West to give them a commanding and deserved nine point winning margin. The full time score was Fr. Caseys 0-11, Newcastle West 3-11.
It was a night to forget with too many battles lost throughout the pitch. The loss of key players to injury in the week of the game proved too severe and hopefully this will be resolved before the knockout stages. The team now have four weeks to improve ahead of the county quarter final against Monaleen. There is enough quality in this team to make a positive response and fingers crossed we see this on show when the football championship returns at the end of September.
County U15 Feile Champions
Well done to Fr. Caseys U15 Boys who won the County Feile last Saturday defeating Cappagh Rathkeale in the final. This is a fantastic achievement and wish them the best of luck in the next phase.
