Senior County Football Championship Round 2

Fr. Caseys 1-05, Adare 0-12

Having comprehensively defeated St. Senans in round one, Fr. Caseys travelled to Mick Neville Park last Friday full of confidence but knowing they would need to tick every box to topple the regaining county champions. After a cagey opening 10 minutes, it was Fr. Caseys who registered the first score when Adrian Enright converted from a placed ball. Adare replied immediately with four points in a five minute spell to march into a three point lead. On 20 minutes Fr. Caseys broken from defensive at pace, picking out Cormac Roche in the forward line who in turn put Billy Quirke through on goal and with just the keeper to beat Billy converted in style, blazing the ball to the roof of the net to level the scores. A well taken point from play from Rory O’Brien then put the fealesiders in front but Adare finished the half the strongest with three unanswered points to leave the scores Fr. Caseys 1-02, Adare 0-07 at the break. Adare deserved their slender half time lead with the accuracy of Mikey Lyons in front of goal the biggest thorn in our side. Fr. Caseys had been defensive for large parts but with Cormac Roche and Billy Quirke providing the outlet up front there was amble opportunity for a comeback. The loss of captain Daniel Daly on 10 minutes was without doubt a major setback to the team.

After the restart both teams traded points with Jamie O’Connor on target for Fr. Caseys with a pointed free. Two more Adare points soon followed and another converted free from Jamie O’Connor to leave three points between the teams with 20 minutes remaining. Realising the danger of their opponents, Adare began to crowd the defence and secure the valuable match points. Adare nullified the Fr. Caseys attack for up to 15 minutes before Billy Quirke eventually fisted a point with five minutes remaining to reduce the margin to two points and setup a grandstand finish. Fr. Caseys pushed everyone forward to steal a late victory but Adare withstood the pressure and countered with two points of their own deep in injury time to escape with a four point victory. Fr. Caseys had battled gamely against the county champions and while it was obvious this young team still has many areas to perfect there has to be optimism that we are moving in the right direction. The championship now breaks until late July while the inter-county scene takes center stage. The full-time score was Fr. Caseys 1-05 – Adare 0-12.

Minor County Football Championship Round 1

Fr. Caseys 2-13, Ballylanders 1-07

Well done to all involved on such an impressive display. The championship now breaks until the start of July for exams and will resume with games against Monaleen, St. Kierans and St. Patricks.
