Senior County Football Championship Round 2

Fr. Caseys Vs Adare, Friday April 5th in Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale at 8pm

Senior County Football Championship Round 1

Fr. Caseys 2-17 St. Senans 1-09

Last Friday evening Fr. Caseys travelled to Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale to take on St. Senan’s in round one of the county football championship. With a new management team and some new faces, Fr. Caseys were keen to hit the ground running and that’s exactly what they did in the opening quarter. After 15 minutes they had raced into a deserved 0-06 to 0-02 lead. David Ward and Darren Keane were commanding midfield and this gave us the perfect springboard for our lively forward line to run at St. Senan’s at will. In defence the main threat from Ian Ryan was being well marshalled by our youthful full back line of Adam Riordan, Ronan Sweeney and Tommy O’Keefe. The attacking runs from half backs Keith Harnett, Daniel Daly and John Riordan added further threat and Fr. Caseys were soon 0-10 to 0-03 in front. This lead was thanks to the accuracy of Jamie O’Connor from placed balls, a well taken point from championship debutant Rory O’Brien and a lovely long range point from captain Daniel Daly. On 25 minutes Fr. Caseys put clear daylight between the teams when Billy Quirke burst through the defence and rifled the ball to the net. There was time for both teams to exchange points before the break, Jamie O’Connor on target again to increase his tally for the night. The half time score was Fr. Caseys 1-11, St. Senan’s 0-04.

After a perfect opening half and a 10 point lead, the half time team talk was surely to ask for more of the same. Outscoring their opponents by four points to two in the third quarter, Fr. Caseys now had a 12 point lead with 15 minutes on the clock. It was now time to ring the changes and with Fiachra Cotter and Cormac Roche joining the fray the team could only be strengthened. Cormac made an instinct impact with 1-01 from play in a 5 minute spell to put the contest to bed. With a 16-point lead entering the final 10 minutes, the only complaint on a near perfect performance from Fr. Caseys was that they may have eased off too early and it allowed St. Senan’s reduce the margin to 11 points before the final whistle. The full-time score was Fr. Caseys 2-17, St. Senans 1-09

Fr. Caseys will be delighted with such a commanding victory. While St. Senan’s were under strength on the night, the Abbeyfeale men moved with speed, showed great composure in front of goal and the work rate all over the field could not be faulted. Next Friday however will be a completely different test when they take on reigning county champions Adare who themselves recorded victory in round one with 5 points to spare over Monaleen. This encounter will tell the ultimate tale of the capabilities of this youthful Fr. Caseys team but a repeat of the energy shown in round one and we should be in for a very competitive tie. That game takes place on Friday night in Mick Neville Park, once more with an 8pm throw in. Your support as always would be greatly appreciated.
