County Senior Championship:
Fr. Caseys 0-11 Rathkeale 0-11
Saturday afternoon and Coolyroe was the venue for the round four of the Irish wire senior football championship against Rathkeale. In a game played in beautiful conditions, light breeze, sun shining, one would have thought it was ripe for a good flowing game of football. However it was a tight tactical affair but with no less drama than you would expect between these two teams. The game started with lively enough with it being tit for tat in the opening fifteen minutes Eliah Riordan opened the account with a free to respond to Rathkeales opener, and when they went ahead again he scored another this time from play. When Rory O’Brien went through on goal he was fouled as he was about to shoot for a goal and Ronan Quirke converted the resulting free Casey’s were in the lead, however it would be a long time again to take the lead. Rathkeale responded well with a brace of two pointers and when Adrian Enright and Dylan Quirke got a point either side of another Rathkeale point the half time score read 0-07 to 0-05 for the Deelsiders.
The start of the second half was when they went contest really got scrappy and it took fifteen minutes before a score was kicked. Fr Casey’s were lucky Culann Quigley blocked a goal bound shot but a three up breach meant a tap over free and Rathkeale led by 3, which they quickly made four. This seemed to bring out the best in the boys and four points in succession from Adrian Enright, an Eliah two pointer free and young Danny McCarthy from play who had an instant impact after entering the fray. It was a draw game at this stage and when a disputed effort from Mike Kilbridge was waved wide and Rathkeale went up the field to regain the lead with only minutes left it looked like the season was in jeopardy. However up stepped Eliah with a free to level it and from the kick out Rory O’Brien kicked what many thought was the winner. With time at the refs discretion the Rathkeale side fighting for their season went up and scored a levelling point deep in stoppage time. The drama wasn’t over though as from the kickout Rathkeale pressed and won possession and had the last attack and when Johnny Murphy awarded them a free it was going to mean one of two seasons was on the line. The free missed right and the game finished in a draw. Mike O’Brien asked after said “a draw wasn’t what we were looking for but we knew Rathkeale would be tough and in the end we are lucky to maybe leave with a draw but that point could prove vital and it still keeps it in our hands heading into the last round of games and we know what we have to do.”
County Junior A Championship:
Fr. Caseys 2-15 Athea 0-14
On Thursday last the unbeaten Junior team looked to take a big step in this years championship and top the group with a game to spare when they played Athea in Mountcollins under the lights. In a game that turned out to be truly one of two halves it was the men in blue who started much the better. When it started the first few minutes were a feeling out period but Casey’s will feel they deserved more when a flowing move ended with Morgan Scannell rattling the bar with a bullet of a shot, it set the tone for what was to come in the half. The fealesiders got a grasp around the middle and with the forwards causing Athea problems they ran out to an early lead of three points with scores coming from Billy Quirke and Donagh Kelly from placed balls and Paraic McEnery and Eoghan O’Connell controlling the game. As Athea started to find their feet with a couple of scores what turned out to be a vital part of the game came fifteen minutes into the game when Athea looked destined to take the lead Calum O’Connor blocked a shot on the line and then reacted to smother the rebound. The Casey’s defence battened down the hatches from then on with Cillian Cotter, Cathal Woulfe and Jack Nolan time after time bringing a halt to Athea incursions into the Caseys half. When Abbeyfeale extended the lead with a few scores before half time with Morgan Scannell and Jamie Dore adding to more placed balls from the old reliables up front Billy and Donagh a six point lead flashed on the electronic scoreboard. However as referee Mikey Browne was about to blow the half time whistle Billy Quirke struck a crucial blow as he buried to the back of the net to leave the score at the short whistle 1-09 to 0-03 points.
The second half started and the break only suited one team as Athea got on top around the middle and slowly but surely started to chip away at the Casey’s lead. Point by point and sometimes two pointer by two pointer the Athea men got it back to a two point game with less than ten minutes on the clock 1-13 to 0-14 points. However that’s when the wise heads really kicked in for the Abbeyfeale men, Eoghan O’Connell picked up a short kick out and worked it around picking passes and finding pockets of space and when he found the evergreen Eoin McEnery on the left wing a beautiful right footed strike from in front of the stand settled the nerves and seemed to knock the comeback of Athea on its head. Eoghan O’Connell then kicked a point off his lesser seen left foot and it had gone back to a four point game as the clock hit the red. However the gloss was put on the scoreboard when with the last kick of the game Jamie Dore put a rocket into the Athea net and a game that looked like it was slipping away finished in a flattering seven point win. Fr Casey’s Junior manager Keith Harnett said after the game “we came here to get the win and that’s all that matters, we nearly let it slip and that’s a good Athea side who threw the kitchen sink at us in the second half but the boys showed great character to rally and look we can set out a plan and see where we go now we know we are in a county semi final”
