County Senior Championship:
Fr. Caseys 0-16 Monaleen 0-15
On Tuesday last the seniors resumed their interest in the county championship. Played in Mick Neville park under lights and with a notable chill in the air one could tell we are fast approaching the business end of the championship and with this a must win game if we wanted to progress to the knockout stages it took on great importance for Mike O’Brien and his charges. The game started at a frantic pace with Monaleen pressing but a turn over and counter resulted in Mark McCarthy cutting in on his right and giving the men in blue and white a perfect start. Monaleen responded quickly and that pattern of play would last through the game. The Quirke cousins were causing trouble early and Dylan gave Casey’s the lead after 6 minutes and when the city side responded quickly Rory O’Brien re-established our advantage. Then a big moment in the game when Monaleen went through for two goal chances but were thwarted first by Shane O’Connell and then by the post and a swift counter attack ended with a Daniel Daly point. Great work around the middle eight and we pushed on quickly and Ronan Quirke got his first and Mark Mc got his second and we led by four but that’s as good as it got for our boys. Monaleen got a purple patch and responded well with four of their own as we went towards half time to level it up at 0-06 apiece. As the ref was preparing to blow the short whistle for half time former county man Adrian Enright grabbed hold of the game getting two great points, one a whisker over the bar for what would have been a brilliant goal and we went in 0-08 to 0-06 to the good.
Monaleen came out strong in the second half scoring a point after fifteen seconds and it was tit for tat for all the second half. Dan Daly got a great curling effort and that was followed by Ronan Quirke kicking a great score either side of two Monaleen responses. No quarter was asked or was given by either team with great scores and great defence by both teams on show, you could tell how much it meant to both side as they wish to progress. Rory O’ Brien kicked his second, but again that was no sooner on the scoreboard when Monaleen had a matcher and the bare minimum between the sides again. Dan Daly and Ronan Quirke kicked their third points respectively but a Monaleen response was never far away and we couldn’t get away from the city team. The theme of the second half seemed to change for a few minutes as Ronan Quirke got another to add to his tally and Adrian Enright kicked a third of the night we finally saw a chink of light in the second half with five minutes remaining. But like the quality team they are Monaleen scored a two pointer and a point to level the game as we had sixty minutes up on the clock. The drama wasn’t over though, as deep in stoppage time a shot from Eliah Riordan was tipped and went agonisingly wide but a touch from the defender who tried to get a block on it resulted in a forty-five. When Keiran Guina informed the players this was the last kick of the game Eliah knew what he had to do, and with ice in his veins he stepped up and cleared it with a kick that would have had the distance if it was a sixty-five. When the full time whistle went there was relief and the championship campaign was back on track. Mike O’Brien said after the game that “it’s great to get a win and keep it in our own hands as we head into the last two rounds and we now know what we need to do, we know it won’t be easy but all eyes now turn to Rathkeale in a couple of weeks.”
