West Junior A Championship Final:
Fr. Caseys 3-16 St. Kierans 1-16
Fr. Casey’s Junior A Footballers made amends for their West League Final defeat to St. Kierans to emerge victorious last Sunday in Athea in the West Junior A Championship Final. Fr. Casey’s last won this competition back in 2017 when the current team manager Keith Harnett lined out at corner back. The team traded scores in the early exchanges before 1-01 without reply gave St. Kierans an early lead. Billy Quirke from a placed ball then kicked a two pointer to reduce the deficit. Billy was again on target, this time from open play after being setup by his cousin Ronan. St. Kierans maintained a slender lead but a pointed free from Ronan Quirke kept the fealesiders in touch. A black card for St. Kierans gave our boys some breathing space and they took command in the second quarter with wing back Jake Quirke getting in on the scoring. Evan O’Connor converted a free and then Jamie Dore burst through the defence to rattle the net. Now leading by three points the momentum was in our favour but St. Kierans dug deep to kick the last three points of the half and the teams went in level at 1-07 each.
A point from Jamie Dore who was having a fine game opened the second half scores. St. Kierans levelled proceedings but then it was the turn of Ronan Quirke to blast the ball home, rattling the top corner of the net. A point from Billy Quirke soon followed and then Jamie Dore captured his second goal of the evening to stretch the margin to seven points. The teams traded scores in the coming minutes, Ronan, Jake and Cillian Cotter on target for the Abbeyfeale men. St. Kierans pushed hard in the last quarter to give themselves a lifeline but the Fr. Caseys defence marshalled by Danny McCarthy and Tommy O’Keeffe stood firm. In midfield Bevan Scannell was also reigning supreme and well assisted by Cathal and Oisin Woulfe. For each point St. Kierans scored, Fr. Caseys had a reply with Ronan adding three more points two from frees while Billy also converted a forty-five. When the whistle went the final score was 3-16 to 1-16 and a deserved victory for a well drilled Fr. Caseys team. The West Cup was presented by Johnny Walsh to the winning captain Kieran Roche. Well done to all involved on a super performance and result. Thoughts now turn to the county championship which begins for this team on July 20th.
