County Senior League Final:
Fr. Caseys 0-09 Monaleen 0-06
Fr. Caseys Senior Footballers retained the County League Title last Friday evening when they defeated Monaleen by 0-09 to 0-06 in the Bog Garden.
It was the first Friday in June, a fresh evening with a strong breeze blowing up to the road goals in the bog garden as the sun tried to break through, our seniors contested the county league final against a well drilled Monaleen side. Monaleen won the toss and elected to play with the elements, Mike O’Briens team knew for the first half it was more about restricting the city team rather than adding to the score board on the blue and white side of the ledger. And as Alan Kehoe threw up the ball a pattern of play was obvious from both teams. Casey’s when they got the ball it was a probe and recycle style as the scoring zone was greatly reduced and patience was required, while the Monaleen team were looking to utilise the wind and move it fast and get the shooters on the ball. Monaleen started the better and raced into a three point lead, a score that would have been worse if it wasn’t for an excellent reaction save from custodian Billy Quirke, a save that was to prove crucial in the outcome of the game. It was a throwback to yester year for the Quirke family when Dixie, Derry and Liam donned the blue and white with all three of them having a son on the starting team. The fealesiders started to get a foot hold in the game and show more patience in possession and carved out a few scoring opportunities, but it wasn’t till nearly 20 minutes in when Eliah Riordan scored the first of the day a curling effort from play. And just like the buses when you wait for one another score quickly followed a Martin Scannell free. That however was as good as it got and before half time Monaleen tagged on two more scores. The Caseys management would have been happy to go in just 3 down against the wind.
Mike was quick to rally the troops at half time and relay the message the wind never won anything and never kicked a score. The half time talk worked and the Abbeyfeale men came out like a different team and different mind-set and with the ability to play with more freedom quickly erased the deficit. Two men at different stages of the footballing spectrum Ronan O’Connell with a point from play and Martin Scannell from a dead ball made it the bare minimum, then the Quirke cousins shot two quick fire points from play, Dylan with the leveller and Ronan with a boomer from his right foot. This was a lead Caseys wouldn’t relinquish for the rest of the game. When fresh legs were introduced Caseys upped it another gear. Adam Fitzgerald showing great pace and accuracy to shoot over two points, one which was destined for the top corner but the keeper pulled off a great save to tip over the bar. As the clock hit the red and Monaleen not scoring since the 27 minute they raised a white flag to bring three points between the teams. When Alan Kehoe gave the long whistle it was Casey’s who were victorious and retained the county league. When Mike O’Brien was asked after he said he was happy with the first half performance against the wind but wanted improvement in the scoring in the second thirty minutes. As Dan Daly received the cup from Wayne Fitzgerald he raised it to a fine Fr. Caseys cheer from the crowd. When asked for his views after he acknowledged “it’s the west league and the county league won but it’s the Fr. Casey cup the eyes are turning to now”. Daniel also was quick to point out that “it’s been a great finish to a league campaign that was faltering at the start but like a rolling stone it gathered momentum and resulted in back to back county leagues titles” Team Billy Quirke, John Riordan, Culann Quigley, Robert Browne, Michael Kilbridge, Daniel Daly, DJ Stack, Eliah Riordan, Oisin Woulfe, Dylan O’Connor, Martin Scannell, Ronan O’Connell, Ronan Quirke, David Ward, Dylan Quirke, Sean Scannell, Danny McCarthy, Calum Boyle, Cillian Cotter, Adam Fitzgerald, Tommy O’Connell, Cathal McCoy, Sam Quigley.
Limerick GAA:
Best of luck to the Limerick senior footballers who take on Wexford at home in the Gaelic Grounds this Sunday at 3.45pm in the quarter final of the Tailteann Cup. With a perfect record to date they will be hoping to continue winning ways but face a tough battle against a strong Wexford side that also gained promotion from division 4 this year. Wishing Mark, Fiachra, Diarmuid and Rory all the best.
