West Junior A Football League:
Fr. Caseys 1-09 Athea 0-13
Fr. Casey’s kicked off the 2025 season for the Junior team playing Athea in a repeat of last year’s county quarter final. A youthful side took the field aided by the more experienced Billy Quirke and the Sweeney twins looking to avenge last year’s penalty shootout loss in Mountcollins. It was a point a piece after the opening few minutes, Billy Quirke responding to an opening score from Athea. The men from beyond Cratloe started to take over after that with the Abbeyfeale men just keeping on to the coat tails with points from the two Quirke’s, Billy and Ronan. Athea had dominance at this stage of the game and pulled in to a five point lead but after a few wasted opportunities by the Abbeyfeale men Killian Sweeney scored his opening point of the half to make it a four point game at half time with Athea leading 0-08 to 0-04.
Harsh words and a bit of added experience at half time, with the introduction of Kevin ‘Molly’ O’Connor, Casey’s hoped the second half would lead to a change of fortune. However the Athea men started better and extended the lead with a few scores including a two pointer that drew an orange flag from the umpire. However the tide started to change and Casey’s played more direct into a focal point of Kevin Molly at the edge of the square and it bore significant fruit with him having a big hand in 1-1 scored by young Adam Murphy and the game was back in the melting pot 1-05 to 0-12. Killian Sweeney then made Fr. Casey’s history kicking the first two pointer for the club and suddenly the margin was back down to two with the clock hitting fifty minutes. Billy and Kevin kept the score board ticking scoring points either side of an Athea response and the game was down to the bare minimum with less than five minutes to go. Casey’s were in all-out attack mode with full press on Athea who struggled to break out from the road side goal that the breeze was blowing towards. The men in blue and white had three dead ball opportunities at the end of the game to level it up but lived to rue the missed opportunities as the last mark went wide it was met by the full time whistle. The bare minimum is all that separated the teams and no doubt it will be something similar in championship later in the year. Great to see the Junior team back in league action after not fielding a team in the league last year, this will only stand to some of the young and not so young on the squad.

Limerick Football:
Well done to the Limerick senior footballers who secured a hard fought draw away to Wicklow last Sunday to maintain second place in division 4. This means victory over Waterford in their final group game will give Limerick automatic promotion. That game will be played this Sunday in Mick Neville Park with a 1pm throw in. Best of luck to all involved including our club players Mark McCarthy, Fiachra Cotter, Diarmuid Buckley and Rory O’Brien.
Well done also to the Limerick U20 footballers who made up for an opening round defeat to Tipperary to defeat Waterford in round two.
