Fr. Caseys GAA Club Notes:
Senior County Final;
Fr. Caseys 0-08 Adare 1-10
Despite a gallant effort Fr. Caseys wait for a first Senior title since 2006 continues. The opening quarter saw Adare kick 1-03 without reply as the Abbeyfeale men found it hard to find their feet in front of the large crowd in Mick Neville Park. On eighteen minutes Diarmuid Buckley kicked a fine individual point and we were off the mark. This was soon followed by a point from Martin Scannell as Fr. Caseys were gaining dominance. A brace of Adare points halted the momentum and restored their six point cushion. Lady luck was not on our side, with two potential points coming off the posts and Martin Scannell denied a goal by a great save by the Adare keeper after David Ward broke a high ball into his path.
A big start was needed to the second half if we were to turn this game on its head. A pointed free from Eliah Riordan was soon cancelled out by Adare but the next fifteen minutes saw Fr. Caseys produce their finest football. Four points without reply were registered with a fisted point from Rory O’Brien, followed by a Martin Scannell free before captain Daniel Daly and Rory O’Brien scored fine points from play. The margin was now two points and there was renewed hope in the stands. A crowded goalmouth prevented a David Ward goal after great work from Cormac Roche. Adare badly needed a reply and they kicked their seventh point to gain some breathing space. The deficit could have been more only for a fine save by keeper Shane O’Connell. A free converted by Eliah Riordan once more left just two points between the sides with ten minutes now on the watch. Unfortunately that would be our last score as Adare added three points without reply in the closing stages. Another fine save from Shane O’Connell kept the game alive but the goals we needed never came despite the tireless effort of all involved.
Any county final defeat is hard to take but as the saying goes maybe you have to lose one to win one. This was the first taste of a senior county final for the majority of this team and that experience will stand to them in the future. A poor opening quarter maybe left the team with too much work to do but their powerful start to the second half meant Adare were pushed all the way and had to dig deep for victory. The thirty four man squad and management team lead by Eoin Joy and Shane Kelly can be extremely proud of their efforts, they have done the club proud and their day will come. Many thanks to the large support who cheered them on until the end. Hopefully the winter is kind and this group can all return in 2025 for a second bite.
