Fr Caseys GAA Club Notes:
Senior County Semi-Final:
Fr. Caseys 0-09 Mungret 0-08
Fr. Caseys are back in the County Senior Football Final for the first time since 2009 after a hard fought one point victory over Mungret last Sunday in Newcastle West. Playing into the strong breeze, Fr. Caseys opened the scoring after David Ward pounced on some Mungret indecision with Martin Scannell pointing the resulting free. Adare were soon level but a fine score from a busy Adrian Enright had Fr. Caseys back in front. Aided by the gale Adare kicked the next four points, a number of these from placed balls as Fr. Caseys fought hard to stop the momentum. A well worked point which was eventually converted by corner back Michael Kilbridge steadied the ship with Adrian Enright unlucky not to grab a goal in the same period. Some great defending at the other end with captain Daniel Daly to the fore with some vital blocks kept the margin at bay but Adare would kick the last point of the half to head to the interval with a 0-06 to 0-03 lead. Given the tough conditions and the disadvantage to the Abbeyfeale men, the large crowd in attendance were content with the deficit and felt the game was still very much in our control.
A positive start to the second half was needed and although Adare grabbed the opening point this was soon followed by a pointed free from Martin Scannell and scores from play from Adrian Enright and again Martin on target. A single point now separated the sides and the teams were level when Martin converted another free. The momentum was now with Fr. Caseys and the loudest cheer of the day went up when half back Mark McCarthy slotted over to regain the lead. Adare were far from finished however and they controlled possession over the next ten minutes. The Fr. Caseys defence stood firm, forcing Adare to kick from awkward angles and from distance which was never acceptable given the elements. A high ball into the box however with eight minutes remaining was fisted goal ward only for Shane O’Connell to pull off a heroic save and keep the lead intact. A converted free from Eliah Riordan, off the ground near the side line finally gave some breathing space but Adare quickly replied and the margin was a single point again. For a team that had waited so long for a county final appearance they were not to be denied and Fr. Caseys held on for a deserved victory. The final whistle went and Fr. Caseys were back to where they belonged. The final score was Fr. Caseys 0-09, Mungret 0-08.
On a horrible day for football, this team stood up and were counted. A fantastic team performance with their captain Daniel Daly leading by example. Adare now standing in the way of our first county title since 2006 after they defeated reigning county champions Newcastle West on the other side. Fr. Caseys will enter as underdogs but all involved in the club are aware that should this team turn up and deliver on the day they will be very hard to stop. We wish Eoin Joy and Shane Kelly the very best in the coming fortnight as they prepared the team. We are very proud of the efforts to date but still greedy for one more big celebration. The final at present is scheduled for Sunday November 3rd in Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale with a 4pm throw in. More details will be shared in the coming week
