Senior County Championship:
Fr. Caseys 1-09 Newcastle West 1-12
Fresh from winning the County League title, Fr. Caseys senior footballers travelled to Tournafulla last Friday evening in optimistic mood to take on the reigning county champions Newcastle West. There was little to separate the teams in the opening quarter with both sides trading scores to leave it 0-03 each, Martin Scannell among the Fr. Caseys scorers. Newcastle West then kicked four points without reply in a ten minute period to gain some daylight. A brace of points from Fr. Caseys halted the momentum but Newcastle West would kick the final point of the half to lead 0-08 to 0-05 at the break.
Once more both teams traded scores in the third quarter and the three point deficit remained. A well taken goal from Adrian Enright then sparked life into the contest and the team were level at 1-07 to 0-10. Unfortunately Newcastle West also raised a green flag within five minutes, Mike McMahon fisting to the net and the three point margin was restored. The teams traded points in the closing stages but the margin could not be overturned. The score was 1-12 to 1-09 when the final whistle went.
A brave showing but the scoreline reflected the game with Newcastle West shading the contest. To frighten the county champions in round one is no mean feat but there is little time to reflect as our Seniors face Oola in Ballybrown this Friday evening in round two. We will start as favourites but Oola who also narrowly lost their opening game to Galtee Gaels will also be keen to get points on the board. An interesting battle is expected, your support as always is greatly appreciated.
Junior A County Championship:
Fr. Caseys 0-11 Croom 5-05
Fr. Caseys junior footballers travelled to the Bog Garden in Rathkeale last Saturday evening for the opening round of the county championship. The team is manged this year by John Boyle and Joseph Flaherty with a nice mix of young and old. On the night they faced a very strong Croom side that were clinical in front of goal. On five occasions Croom rattled the net and although Fr. Caseys rallied, kicking eleven points on the night, the old story of goals win games was never more evident. In round two they will be keen to make amends but will face another tough test against an in form Monagea side. With a long break then until mid-August it will be vital the team have a positive response this week to get their championship campaign back on track.
