Senior Football League
Fr. Caseys 1-09 St. Kierans 1-04
Fr. Caseys Senior Footballers started their 2024 campaign last Saturday with a league encounter against St. Kierans at home. Aided by the strong breeze in the first half, Fr. Caseys raced into an early lead with well taken points from Eoghan O’Connell and Adrian Enright. After the first quarter that lead was 0-04 to 0-01 with Rory O’Brien and Dylan Quirke adding to the scoreboard. Fr. Caseys were working hard and also winning the key battles. They would go on to kick four more points without reply before the break with a brace from Adrian Enright while Daniel Daly and Killian Sweeney were also on target. A brilliant save from Shane O’Connell in a one on one attack mid-way through the half also needed to be mentioned. The half time score was Fr. Caseys 0-08, St. Kierans 0-01.
Now facing the breeze the second half challenge was to protect their lead and a fine point from Diarmuid Buckley after the restart stretched the lead to eight points. St. Kieran eventually gained a foot hold in the game and kicked three points without reply to reduce the margin to five points with fifteen minutes remaining. A well taken St. Kierans goal with ten minutes remaining resurrected a game that looked comfortable for the home side but credit to Adrian Enright who had a fine game throughout and he rattled the net at the other end with five minutes remaining to restore the five point cushion. Fr. Caseys showed maturity to keep possession in the closing stages and held on for a deserved victory. For the first outing of the year it was a positive display however new coach Shane Kelly will also see many opportunities to improve. The full time score was Fr. Caseys 1-09, St. Kierans 1-04
