Fr Casey’s GAA Club Notes:

U21 County Final:
Fr. Caseys 0-08 Mungret 1-06
Fr. Caseys U21 Footballers travelled to Tournafulla on December 27th bidding for a third County U21 Title in as many years. Standing in there way were a strong Mungret side full of confidence having claimed the County U21 Hurling, Intermediate Football and Minor Football Titles in recent months. It took close to ten minutes for the opening score with Eoghan O’Connell pointing from a free. After the first quarter the teams were level at 0-02 each, Adam Fitzgerald getting our first point from play. Mungret briefly took the lead but four points without reply gave the Abbeyfeale men a three point cushion at the break. Eliah Riordan with a brace, one from a free, Adam Fitzgerald registering another white flag and Marc Nolan kicking a fine point from forty yards. The half time score was 0-06 to 0-03.
Mungret kicked the opening point of the second half but Marc Nolan soon restored the three point cushion. Both defences were well on top and scores were at a premium. Mungret cut the deficit to two points with ten minutes remaining but failed to make further progress. When Eliah Riordan pointed a free on the stroke of full time it looked like the county title was remaining in the west but Mungret would break hearts with a late goal and force the game to extra time. While it was a cruel blow, over the course of the game both teams were very evenly matched and if Mungret had been more accurate on placed balls they would have reaped more reward. The score at the end of sixty minutes was Fr. Caseys 0-08, Mungret 1-05.
There was no score in the first period of extra time as the rain fell down and the light started to fade. The game looked destined for penalties until Mungret struck for a point with two minutes remaining. Fr. Caseys had two further opportunities from long distance placed balls to level the scores but neither would be converted. After such a gallant effort it was a painful defeat to take. The full time score was Fr. Caseys 0-08, Mungret 1-06. Well done to all the players and management for all their efforts in this competition. They were just a kick of a ball away from a historic treble and I have no doubt they will come back stronger next year
