County Senior Football Quarter-Final
Fr. Caseys 3-15 Na Piarsaigh 4-03
Fr. Caseys Senior Footballers made the trip to Askeaton last Saturday to face Na Piarsaigh in an eagerly awaited contest with a county semi-final place up for grabs. Fr. Caseys started the brightest and kicked four points inside the opening ten minutes with veterans David Ward and Martin Scannell leading the line. A goal from Na Piarsaigh midway through the half reduced the margin to a single point with the scoreboard reading 0-06 to 1-02 in favour of the Abbeyfeale men. Na Piarsaigh would fail to score for the remainder of the half while Fr. Caseys added another 1-03 before the half time whistle. The goal coming from the boot of David Ward late in the half. At the interval, the score was 1-09 to 1-02 with Fr. Caseys fully deserving their seven-point cushion.
The floodgates opened for the first ten minutes of the second half with Na Piarsaigh raising two green flags to give their challenge a lifeline before Martin Scannell and Sam Quigley netted for Fr. Caseys to restore order. Na Piarsaigh would add their fourth goal midway through the half but Fr. Caseys never yielded dominance and kept a safe margin on the scoreboard with further points. Outscoring their city opponents by 2-06 to 3-01 in the second period, Fr. Caseys marched on to a comfortable nine point victory to setup a repeat of last years semi-final with Adare. Daniel Daly in midfield, lead by example with a brilliant display throughout. Our forwards were extremely clinical on the day with Martin Scannell (1-03), Sam Quigley (1-02), David Ward (1-01) and Dylan Quirke (0-03) all registering sizeable tallies. The only worry was the concession of four goals, something the management team will aim to resolve in the coming weeks. Our club hasn’t seen a senior county final since 2009 and hasn’t won one since 2006. This wasn’t meant to be the year after the loss of some many players due to immigration but the new kids on the block haven’t read that script and mixed with the experience that remained they fully deserve to be in the semi-finals. They will welcome a free shot at Adare who carry the favourites tag. We wish all involved the best of luck in their preparation and hopefully on October 21st in Mick Neville Park this team can deliver once more
