County Senior Football Championship:
Fr. Caseys 0-16 Claughaun 2-03
Fr. Caseys Senior Footballers travelled to Rathkeale last Sunday evening aiming to pick up their first points of the championship against a Claughaun side who had also suffered an opening round defeat. While Fr. Caseys ran county champions Newcastle West extremely close, the first round saw Claughaun suffer a heavy defeat to Kildimo/Pallaskenry.
Fr. Caseys raced into an early lead, outscoring their city opponents by 0-06 to 0-01 in the opening quarter. Donagh Kelly was first on the scoreboard with Claughaun soon levelling. Another point from Donagh along with a point from half back Sean Kilbridge and a brace of frees from Dylan Quirke made for the perfect start. Futher points from Oisin Woulfe, Mark McCarthy and John Riordan had the Abbeyfeale men leading by seven points as we neared half time but a Claughaun goal on the 29th minute left just four between the teams at the break, Caseys leading 0-09 to 1-02.
Score were at a premium for the first twenty minutes of the second half with both defences on top. Adding three further points to the scoreboard, Claughaun with just one in reply left six points between the teams with the finishing line in sight. Claughaun needed a big reply and with five minutes to go they rattled the net for a second time to resurrect their chances. Fr. Caseys who had been the commanding side throughout held their nerve however and kicked the final four points of the night to march to a hard fought seven point victory. The full time score was Fr. Caseys 0-16, Claughaun 2-03.
The senior championship now breaks until mid August. Fr. Caseys with 2 points from 2 games will return to a round three tie against Oola. Two wins from the three remaining games should be enough for a knockout place. Despite losing several key players our seniors are still competing admirably. With some improvements to make hopefully they will return in August a more dangerous force
