West Senior Football Championship Fr. Caseys 2-11 Rathkeale 4-07

Fr. Caseys Senior Footballers made the short trip to Newcastle West last Wednesday evening to take on Rathkeale in the Quarter Final of the West Senior Football Championship. Rathkeale struck first blood with an early point but this was soon cancelled out when Rory O’Brien slotted over from open play. After a slow opening 10 minutes the game then turned into a goal fest for the next 20 minutes. Rathkeale raised the first green flag but within two minutes Rory O’Brien had repeated the feat at the other end, showing great composure to slot past the onrushing keeper. Rathkeale would strike two more goals before the break but thankfully Fr. Caseys were more fruitful with the white flag and headed to the half time break just one point in arrears. The Fr. Caseys points coming from Sean O’Donnell, Michael Keane, Daniel Daly, Cathal Broderick and Rory O’Brien. The half time score was Fr. Caseys 1-08, Rathkeale 3-03. Most impressive for Fr. Caseys were the new kids on the block Rory O’Brien and Michael Keane.

Rathkeale opened the second half scoring with a point but then Kevin O’Connor showed great strength and accuracy to hold off his marker and dispatch the ball to the Rathkeale net. This score put Fr. Caseys in front for the first time. Shortly after Kevin O’Connor had the white flag raised but a brace of points from Rathkeale had the scores level as we entered the final 10 minutes. A pointed free from Jamie O’Connor was cancelled out by another Rathkeale point and the teams remaining inseparable with five minutes on the clock. Having looked menacing all night, the Rathkeale forwards had one more trick up their sleeve and stuck for a fourth goal to effectively kill the contest. Fr. Caseys refused to throw in the towel but a late point from David Ward would not be

enough. Rathkeale eventually emerging two point victors on a score-line of Fr. Caseys 2-11, Rathkeale 4-07. This defeat ends our West Championship involvement. Next up for Fr. Caseys is a meeting with Newcastle West on May 31st in the County League.
