FR CASEYS

Senior County Championship
Fr. Caseys 0-12 Galbally 0-08
Fr. Caseys maintained their 100% championship record last Thursday night in Rathkeale but it wasn’t without a hard battle against a Galbally side making a late surge for qualification. Both teams exchanged early frees before Galbally raced into a 0-03 to 0-02 lead at the mid-way point in the first half. Having levelled the scores, Fr. Caseys pushed themselves into a two-point lead thanks to scores from Rory O’Brien and Martin Scannell. The final point of the half went to Galbally to leave the bare minimum between the sides at the break. The half time score was Fr. Caseys 0-06, Galbally 0-05
Two early second half points from Dylan Quirke and Martin Scannell gave the Abbeyfeale men some needed breathing space but fighting for their season, Galbally were never going to give up and the deficit was again reduced to a single point as we entered the final quarter. This Fr. Caseys side is operating with a new confidence this year however and despite some team changes for this fixture they were still up for the challenge. Three points without reply in a ten minute spell ended this contest with the pick of these scores coming from Cormac Roche from 45 meters. The teams would exchange points once more before the final whistle with Cathal Broderick kicking the last point of the night. Although we found it hard at periods to breach the packed Galbally defence and goal chances were non-existent, the team once more responded when needed and captured the valuable match points. This team has steadily improved as the year has progressed but their final group game with Newcastle West will tell the true picture. Both sides will complete for top spot in the group and an automatic semi-final spot. A fierce encounter is expected here and hopefully the next four weeks until that game can be used wisely. The full time score was Fr. Caseys 0-12, Galbally 0-08.
Intermediate County Championship
Fr. Caseys 2-11 Pallasgreen 1-16
Fr. Caseys Intermediate Footballers travelled to Feenagh last Saturday evening looking for their first win in the championship against a Pallasgreen team who were also pointless after the opening three rounds. After losing Jamie O’Connor and Eoghan O’Connell to the Senior team on Thursday evening there was a question over the firepower up front but the team rose to the challenge to kick 2-06 in the opening half and carry a slender one point advantage into the break. Pallasgreen also registering 1-08 on the scoreboard made it a very high scoring and entertaining opening period.
After the break both defences started to take command and second half scores were at a premium. Outscoring the fealesiders by 0-08 to 0-05, it was the men from East Limerick who emerged with a narrow two-point victory when the final whistle went. While it was disappointing to marginally lose in a very competitive game it was welcoming to see the team challenging once more after two recent heavy defeats. Well done to all the players for continuing the efforts despite no chance of qualification. With Bruff registering two walkovers in the opposing group, they will be relegated to Junior next season while Fr. Caseys have intermediate status for 2022 guaranteed and can now fully concentrate on senior championship hopes. The final group game for the Intermediates comes in late September against Rathkeale.
