Senior County Championship
Fr. Caseys 1-16 Claughaun 1-06
Last Friday night in Askeaton, Fr. Caseys Senior Footballers faced Claughaun in round two of the county football championship aiming to make it two wins from two before the summer break. Inside the opening five minutes Fr. Caseys were setting a marker with points from Eliah Riordan and Dylan Quirke either side of a Cormac Roche free putting the Abbeyfeale men into an early 0-03 to 0-01 lead. The teams then traded points with another Cormac Roches free sailing over the bar. Having been the more dominant team in the opening ten minutes we hadn’t made it count on the scoreboard and Claughaun would punish this with 1-01 without reply to leave Fr. Caseys trailing by two. A point from Daniel Daly steadied the ship and then Donagh Kelly rattled the net from close range after David Ward had done all the hard work. Another Donagh Kelly point would stretch the lead to three but Claughaun captured the last two points of the half to leave the bar minimum between the teams at the break. The half time score was Fr. Caseys 1-06, Claughaun 1-05.
Claughaun kicked the opening point of the second half to level proceedings but any thoughts of an upset were soon quelled as this would be their last score of the night. A point from Rory O’Brien was soon followed by another Cormac Roche free. There would be no score over the next ten minutes but just as in round one, we hit a new gear in the final quarter to produce a very appealing scoreboard which somewhat flattered us. Dylan Quirke added two points either side of fisted points from David Ward and Adrian Enright to extend the lead to six points. Cormac Roche then slotted over another free before Rory O’Brien, John Riordan and Martin Scannell added late points to give the fealesiders a commanding ten point victory. The final score of 1-16 to 1-06 did no justice to the efforts of Claughaun who battled gamely for long periods. As with the Oola game this team is making a habit of winning convincingly while not giving a complete performance. There is definitely areas to improve over the next five weeks but also there are plenty of signs that this team have the capabilities to trouble the heavy weights if a sixty minute performance can be achieved. Next up is round three against Monaleen on the weekend of August 21st.
Intermediate County Championship
Fr. Caseys 0-02 Mungret 6-16
Fr. Caseys Intermediate Footballers had an evening to forget last Sunday in Mick Neville Park when they suffered a heavy round two defeat to a very strong Mungret side. After a very positive performance against Drom/Broadford the previous week, the same heights were not reached against a Mungret team that were very clinical on the night. The loss of John Riordan and DJ Stack on Friday evening to the Senior team coupled with some current player injuries weakened the team and Mungret showed no mercy to put them to the sword. Next up is difficult round three encounter against Gerald Griffins in five weeks time. The team now need to dust themselves down and regain the swagger they showed earlier this year.
Best of Luck Limerick
Fr. Caseys GAA Club would like to wish the Limerick Senior Hurlers the very best of luck this Sunday as they do battle with Kilkenny for the coveted All-Ireland title. John Kiely and his charges have given us some many memorable days in recent years and we hope they can give us one more big day to celebrate. To bring home Liam McCarthy for four times in five years would have been unimaginable now so long ago but this unique team have set new standards and victory over a rejuvenated Kilkenny side on Sunday would be the icing on the cake.
