Senior County Championship
Fr. Caseys 2-16 Oola 0-08
Last Thursday night in Ballybrown, Fr. Caseys Senior Footballers faced Oola in their county championship opener. This was a game where we entered with the favourites tag but had plenty of caution after Oola impressive run in 2021. The first half was an extremely tight affair and both defence units were coming out on top. The half time score of 0-06 to 0-04 told its own story but thankful it was the Abbeyfeale men that held the edge.
On the restart Fr. Caseys knew they needed to gain breathing space and after ten minutes of the second half they lead 0-10 to 0-06. That margin was extended to five points as we entered the final quarter but Oola were still within touching distance. Having being reduced to fourteen players Oolas grip on the game faded inside the final fifteen minutes and Fr. Caseys showed no mercy as they upped the gears. Two goals from Rory O’Brien in the final ten minutes gave a very pretty look to the scoreboard with the fealesiders finishing the game with a fourteen point winning margin. The reality of the game was that this was a much closer contest, which Fr. Caseys had deservedly shaded but the Oola sending off had effectively killed their hopes. In a very difficult group, the management will be very pleased to emerge with maximum points in this opening encounter. On the night there were very impressive displays from Robert Browne, Chris Smith and Eliah Riordan. Next up is Claughaun in round 2 this Friday evening in Askeaton. The game throws in at 7.30pm and those travelling to the game are reminded to once more purchase their entry tickets online in advance. The links for the online purchases for both senior and intermediate games will appear on the club Facebook page as the week progresses.
Intermediate County Championship
Fr. Caseys 2-08 Drom/Broadford 1-13
Last Friday night in Tournafulla, our Intermediate Footballers started their county championship campaign with a daunting task against a fancied Drom/Broadford outfit. The opening five minutes did not go to plan and Drom/Broadford kicked the opening three points. Jamie O’Connor stepped up to the mark with a great long range effort to open Fr. Caseys account and moments later Ronan Quirke burst through the defence and palmed the ball to the back of the net to signal the intent from the boys in blue. Another point from Jamie O’Connor with Drom/Broadford replying with two of their own had the teams level after fifteen minutes. Scores were at a premium in the second quarter with both defence units coming out on top. Fr. Caseys added two more points before the break with Eoghan O’Connell and John Riordan on target, Drom/Broadford adding just one further point to leave them trailing 1-04 to 0-06 at the break.
Fr. Caseys traded points with their opponents on the restart with Killian Sweeney this time on target. A brilliantly converted 45 from Jamie O’Connor delighted the travelling support but Drom/Broadford added two more to the scoreboard to level proceedings once more. Again the team traded points,
Ronan Quirke on target again for Fr. Caseys. With ten minutes remaining nothing could separate the teams and it was anyones guess who would prevail. Drom/Broadford would hit a purple patch over the next five minutes and kicked 1-02 without reply to seemingly end the contest. But this Fr. Caseys team don’t know how to quit and another Janie O’Connor point kept hopes alive. Drom/Broadford restored their five point cushion but then up stepped Kevin O’Connor, moving from defence into attack and slotting past the keeper to give this game a lifeline. There would be time for one more attack but Drom/Broadford were up to the challenge and cleared their lines. The game would end 1-13 to 2-08 in Drom/Broadfords favour but Fr. Caseys had gained many admirers after a very courageous display. Next up is round 2 against Mungret. Hopefully the same spirit is shown and fingers crossed on this occasion they can be victorious.
Well Done Limerick
Fr. Caseys GAA Club would like to congratulate the Limerick Senior Hurlers for another great display last Sunday, holding off a gallant Galway side to win 0-27 to 1-21 and setting up a mouth-watering All-Ireland showdown with Kilkenny on July 17th. We are extremely honoured to have such an amazing group representing our county and hopefully we have one more big day to celebrate in the coming weeks.
