CROOM GAA CLUB NOTES
Intermediate Hurling:
Last Saturday we faced Newcastle West in Mick Neville Park in the county semifinal. This was a repeat of last year’s semifinal. Newcastle West played a similar brand of hurling to last year with extra bodies in defence and at mid field and fast nippy forwards up front. They played well and raced into a 6 points to 1 lead. We settled in the second quarter and won a penalty which Conor Allis dispatched to the net. Newcastle West goaled soon after and we went in 1.09 : 1.08 behind at half time having played with the wind. A good start was crucial but we gave away a couple of frees and found ourselves 2 points behind when the turning point in the game came. A long ball dropped into the square, took an awkward bounce and into the net. This rattled and frustrated our players and we gave away a few more frees and seemed to lose our way as Newcastle West took control and started adding frees and points. We were 7 down at the water break and decided to throw caution to the wind pushing everyone forward. This closed down space in our attack as Newcastle West dropped further back and completely opened up our half of the field. In truth the game was over by then but we battled on trying to force a goal. Newcastle West held firm and cleared their lines up to their quick forwards in acres of space and they took full advantage. The final score was 3.22 : 1.11 with our players and management team gutted afterwards. It is an unfortunate and abrupt end to the season but it was an enjoyable campaign and hopefully we’ll be back soon and bring forward younger players for the future of the club. Best of luck to Newcastle West in the final.
