CRECORA-MANISTER GAA CLUB NOTES

INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL:
Our intermediates retained their status for 2022 with a 0-9 to 0-6 win over Monaleen in a tense affair in Cappamore on Saturday. We came racing out of the blocks and were 0-5 to 0-0 up after just ten minutes as Monaleen found it difficult to deal with us going forward with Mike McCormack in particular winning great ball in the full forward line. Richard Murphy opened the scoring with a fine free from an acute angle and this was followed by a point from play from Karl Moloney after some good build up play before an outstanding long distance score from Conor Burke. Richard added two frees to leave the score at 0-5 to 0-0 at the first waterbreak. Monaleen gradually started to get more of a foothold in the game and got their first score of the game shortly after the water break. Shane O’Connell cut inside his man and was unfortunate to see his effort come off the crossbar when a goal would have put real daylight between the sides. Monaleen went on to kick two more scores but had a man sent off on a second yellow on the stroke of half time as we led by two at the change of ends, 0-5 to 0-3.
Monaleen scored two quickfire points at the start of the second half to level the contest at 0-5 apiece. Ten minutes into the second half we had a free from Richard Murphy to edge back into the lead. We were unfortunate shortly after to have a goal ruled out for a square ball as Shane O’Connell fisted to the net from a Micheál O’Neill handpass, as it remained 0-6 0-5 at the second half water break. We kicked on in the closing stages and fisted points from Micheál and Richard from play along with a free from Richard stretched the lead out to 0-9 0-5. As Monaleen were forced to chase goals our backs held firm with great defending from Evan and Tim Moloney and Sean Fitzgerald in particular. Monaleen did get a point in injury time to bring it back to a three point game but the referee’s whistle went soon afterwards as we ran out winners on a 0-9 to 0-6 scoreline.
This really was a must win game for us due to the importance of retaining our intermediate status and credit to the players for coming out the right side of this attritional affair. Having beaten Kildimo-Pallaskenry in the group stage who now find themselves in the county final, it shows that we have the ability to beat any team in intermediate on our day and we look forward to seeing this group push on next year.
