CRECORA MANISTER

INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALLERS:
Our intermediate footballers have had a busy few weeks with championship matches against Glin and Na Piarsaigh over the space of 5 days in which we came out with 3 points from the two matches. The round 2 game against Glin took place on Saturday 13th August in Rathkeale. The first half was a tight contest with points from Paul Collins, Micheál O’Neill and Conor Burke keeping us in touch but it was Glin who held the upper hand at half time as the scoreline read 0-5 to 0-3 in their favour.
The second half was a different story however as a Micheál O’Neill goal but us into the lead. Cormac Flanagan, Karl Moloney and Darach Skelly were getting on top in midfield while our backs including a vocal Tim Moloney, Killian Scanlon and Mike McCormack were keeping Glin out. Points from Paul and Micheál gave us a three point cushion coming into the closing stages. While Glin scored two points to narrow the gap back to a point, a Glin free with the last kick of the game came down off the post and after we cleared our lines the referee blew the whistle to give us the two points. Final score: Crecora-Manister 1-6 Glin 0-8. Team: Ciarán Heagney; Killian Scanlon, Tim Moloney, Patrick Dolphin; Eugene Begley, Mike McCormack, Peter Boohan; Karl Moloney, Cormac Flanagan; Darach Skelly, Conor Burke (0-1), Donnacha Connolly; Paul Collins (0-2), Micheál O’Neill (1-3), Sam Riordan. Subs: Dom O’Connor, Colm Cassidy, Conor Kirby, Tomás Connolly, Jack Dalton, Rob Greer, John McManus, David Macken, Sean Keyes, Rob Henehan, Richard Murphy (inj), Evan Moloney (inj), Shane O’Connell (inj).
We had a quick turnaround to Thursday night and round three vs Na Piarsaigh played in Mungret. We went into this game as underdogs against a Na Piarsaigh team that had just come down from senior this year. This was another tightly contested game and the first half was a low scoring encounter. Points from Karl Moloney and Paul Collins along with a well-taken goal by Paul left us a point ahead at the break, with Darach Skelly, Cathal O’Neill, Mike McCormack and Tim Moloney in particular doing trojan work in the back line. Na Piarsaigh had a purple patch at the start of the second half and went a point ahead but we managed to reply with frees from Karl. The game was level going into the final stages and unfortunately a fine Conor Burke effort from a free on the 45 which would have given us the win just dropped short and the referee blew the final whistle soon after to see a share of the spoils: Crecora-Manister 1-5 Na Piarsaigh 0-8.
Team: Rob Sweeney; Killian Scanlon, Tim Moloney, Conor Kirby; Eugene Begley, Mike McCormack, Peter Boohan; Karl Moloney, Cormac Flanagan; Darach Skelly, Conor Burke, Cathal O’Neill; Donnacha Connolly, Paul Collins, Jack Dalton. Subs: Dom O’Connor, Patrick Dolphin, Colm Cassidy, Ciarán Heagney, John McManus, David Macken, Sean Keyes, Rob Henehan, Richard Murphy (inj), Evan Moloney (inj), Shane O’Connell (inj), Sam Riordan (inj), Micheál O’Neill (inj). This was a great result for us to get a point against a much-fancied Na Piarsaigh team and puts us in with a great chance of making the quarter finals. We received a walkover from Bruff in round 4 so a win over St Senan’s in the last round on the 24/25th September will see us through to the knockout stages.
JUNIOR B HURLERS:
Our junior B hurlers had a fine win over Mungret in round 2 of the city championship last Saturday night in Crecora. We got off to a slow start and trailed by 0-4 to 0-0 after 10 minutes. However we gradually managed to get more of a foothold in the game and some fine points from Chris Shanahan and Steve Keating brought us within touching distance of Mungret. A fine goel from Brian Relihan put us into the lead and solid defensive work from Dom O’Connor, Garbhan Sheehan and Pa Walsh in particular saw us go in at half time 1-8 to 0-8 in front. Mungret came back at us in the second half and the lead swung back and forth between the sides. We had a penalty saved but fine scores from Chris, Steve, Conor Burke and Pa Sullivan saw us hold out for a 1-14 to 0-16 win. Next up is a third round game vs Claughaun Tuesday 23rd August at 7pm in Claughaun where a win would guarantee us a spot in the city semi finals. Please come out and support the lads. Team: Eoghan O’Callaghan; Garbhan Sheehan, Dom O’Connor, Seán Keyes; Conor Hannan, Conor Burke, Pa Walsh; Chris Shanahan, Fergal Egan; Mike Fitzgerald, Steven Keating, Willie Donovan; Edward McGrath, Pa Sullivan, Brian Relihan. Subs: Cathal Scully, Eoin Hayes, Seán Lavan.
