LIMERICK opened their account in the O’Neill’s Munster U20 Hurling Championship with a 1-18 to 1-14 win over Waterford in Fraher Field, Dungarvan this afternoon.
A Con Hayes goal in the first half set the 2022 provincial champions on their way to an impressive victory in the rearranged fixture from last Wednesday.
Diarmuid Mullins’ side led by six points at one stage in the first half with John Kirby, Shane O’Brien, Hayes and Barry Duff all hitting the target with points.
However, Waterford fought back as the half continued with Patrick Fitzgerald frees cutting Limerick’s advantage to just two points at the break – 1-9 to 0-10.
That lead remained in place with nine minutes gone in the second half and it stayed that way after an excellent save by Josh O’Reilly from a point blank Conor Keane shot. Hayes then put Limerick three points to the good moments later.
Limerick picked off scores as the game drew to a close to lead by seven deep into added time. Fitzgerald got a consolation goal from a 21-metre free but it was Limerick that earned a four-point win.
