Match Report: Under 14 Hurlers Reach County Final:
On Saturday last September 6th. Mick Neville Park in Rathkeale was the venue for the Mr. Binman County Under 14 Division 3 semi final where Blackrock met St. Kieran’s. Both sides came in the game with a very impressive run in the Championship round robin series.
Blackrock were aided by fresh wind in the opening half, both sides exchanged wides from their opening scoring chances, before Blackrock opened the scoring with a pointed free from Alex Fitzgerald followed by two furher points from Luke Gleeson, one from a free to go into a three point lead. St.Kierans came more into the game and opened their account with two points, one from a free before Billy O’Brien scored a Blackrock point to put his side two points in front. The West side took the lead with a well taken goal midway in the opening half. However Blackrock replied immediately when full forward Alex Fitzgeratd won possession and sent sliothar to the St. Kieran’s net to restore the Blackrock lead (1.04 to 1.02) which they held throughout the game. Both sides exchanged points, St. Kierans two, one from play and a free, while Blackrock scored three points, Noah Ryan, free and Luke Gleeson two frees to leave the score at the interval Blackrock 1.07 St. Kierans 1.04.
The second half commenced with Blackrock winning possession in the middle of the field and the sliothar was sent into the forwards where Alex Fitzgerald won possession and scored his second goal from an acute angle to open up a six point lead. St. Kierans now aided by the wind added two points from frees, while Jack Murphy with point from play (2.08 to 1.06). The next phase of play saw St. Kierans being awarded a penalty which was shot for a goal but a brilliant save by the Blackrock ‘keeper deflected for a 65 which was pointed. St Kieran’s kept the pressure but the Blackrock rearguard held firm turned defence into attack from David Cronin won possession at midfield, sent the sliothar to Billy O’Brien who scored Blackrocks third goal followed by a point from Alex Fitzgerald to give Blackrock 3.09 to 1.07 lead with seven minutes of play remaining, St. Kieran’s never up the fight and added two pointed frees followed by a goal to leave only a goal between the sides, try as they might St.Kieran’s were unable to get the vital score, a late pointed free from Luke Gleeson sealed the win and a place in the County Final, a great result for a team that never gave up althrough.
